Look at the books: kids are reading them again and again and again. When was the last time that you kids getting so excited about books?
Of course, re-reading the books doesn't cost $5 a pop. I have a hard time envisioning parents funding more than one or two viewings, then waiting for the DVD.

I said a few weeks ago
$350 million for each of them...Monsters in the $150 million range.
Looks like I will be a little short on Monsters, which might worm up to $200 million. But I also mentioned how stomped on it's about to get by Potter, so we will see what it does on Potter weekend. It might still die off quickly now before getting past 150.
Also, with the pre-sales Potter looks to be headed closer to $450 million or more. I don't see FOTR matching that, but I will hold to my $350 for FOTR.

I think that HP will take the overall box office crown at about 350-375 million. As for FOTR, I think it looks good and will definitely see this, but I fail to see this movie doing more than 250 million.
Now before anyone throws anything at me let me just say this, the movie is one month away and I have not seen any kind of hype/excitement about this movie any where other than the internet. All I see is Harry Potter buzz, I have yet to see anything other than a smattering of commercials and the trailers at the theater. Other than my brother and a few of my friends that work in video games, I know no one else that has any interest to see this movie. Now that doesn't mean they won't,it's just the general lack of excitement that I have seen doesn't bode well for this movies super blockbuster status that everyone is predicting.
Even if the movie is excellent(which by looks, it will be) i think that it will have a hard time bringing in the huge mainstream audience that will propel it into the stratosphere.
Of course I could be way off and it could be the highest grossing movie ever. I guess time will tell.

Without a doubt, Harry Potter will be the highest grossing fil of the three mentioned here. I predict it will gross in excess of $300 million, but nowhere near Titanic's numbers.
Monsters Inc. will come in second with a gross of $200 million or so.
Rings will gross the lowest amount, no more that $150 million perhaps. I dunno, but for some reason, I don't believe it will be as successful as many here on the forum think it will be. Just a hunch.
All just my opinion of course. :)

I agree with your order Tino, although I disagree somewhat with the amounts. Monsters will do well over 200 million. It's already well over 100 million, and I suspect that even though Potter will be a juggernaut, I still suspect that Monsters will keep doing well and remain the #2 at the box office. I also suspect LOTR will do over 200 million, but not over 300 million. I agree that Potter will do over 300 million. However, I disagree with Seth. Potter isn't going to hit 400 million, much less 450 million or more.

I'll only be seeing one of these three theatrically - FOTR.
Only two of these will find their way in to my DVD collection - FOTR and Monsters Inc.
I'm only one person and am voting with my money.

Harry Potter's 3-day take might break the record set by The Lost World at $72M (with special consideration to the film's length). With a longer running time than usual its hard to say right now what it will do. It will also depend on the number of screens it will be shown on. Schools in my area are having field trips to theaters on Friday with showings as early as 9:45 a.m.

The biggest box office sensation of all time became that way due to a swarm of teeny-boppers who had nothing else to do on the their Christmas vacation in 1997.
With all due respect Paul, what are you smoking and where can I get some? :)
Titanic made over $25 million a weekend for nearly two months. This is a film that opened in late December, and stayed #1 at the box office until April, when it was toppled by Lost In Space (which, of course, came and went pretty quickly with less than $70 million in domestic BO).
You can argue the merits of the film, but the truth of the matter remains that this movie had never-before-seen repeat business that continued long, long after the Christmas holiday.
Now back to the main topic, I think FOTR will do very good business but nowhere near the $250+ million range. I'm thinking somewhere around $180 million or so, less if word-of-mouth is less than smashing.
Monsters Inc will continue to do well, even in the face of Potter. Let's face it: with sold-out screenings everywhere, families left cold at the box-office are going to watching something... I'd say Monsters will settle somewhere in the $220 million range.
As for Harry Potter.... hmm... if children and families can take crap like Home Alone to the $280 million range, Potter could probably do about $400 million or so, give or take $50 million in either direction.
Foreign Box Office, however, will be enormous on Potter. I see it's worldwide BO to be second behind Titanic's $1.8 billion.

Indeed. The local AMC has scheduled an additional 5 screenings daily of MI, starting on Friday (up to 22 from 17).

You're not aware of the title of the first book in the trilogy, which is the same as the title of the first movie in the trilogy.
It's trivially easy to find such things out. Simply watching the trailer would do it.

Erm.....Hubert.....with all due respect, you should probably at least read Fellowship Of The Ring (read the other two books while you're at it) before you even visit this thread again. It will give you a whole new perspective.

I"m still standing by my original predictions
end of year grosses
Harry potter 320 mil
Monsters 175 mil
LOTR 160 mil
overall grosses
Harry Potter 405 mil
LOTR 360 mil
MOnsters 180 mil
I only hear about how excited people are for lord of the rings, people know it's coming some how. :) when i ask about harry potter, they go "ehhhh not really, that's a kids movie." These are all teenagers and college age males btw. Heh, I think someone was very right when they said that the 12-20 year old guy is going to want something darker and more mature to trumpet for themselves apart from that kiddie movie. :D

Harry Potter is a family film. A much bigger fan base with over 100 million books sold and translated into over 40 languages. Plus women will go see Harry Potter before LOTR. So there's the difference. Plus I believe LOTR may be an R, but I could be mistaken. Harry Potter brings in 350 million. LOTR brings in 220 million. And I predict, with Monsters still going strong, and will continue to do so, it will do 230 million.
I've seen Monsters and I will see LOTR and Harry Potter. So it makes no nevermind to me.
Admittedly Tom, I have never read the books and probably won't. I'm just gonna enjoy the movie. And what does reading the books have to do with box office predictions? I knew the movie was subtitled Fellowship of the Ring, but for some reason just didn't think about that. Thanks for waking me up.

Hmm, maybe not that big. Maybe a 400 million dollar take. But there's no doubt it will be a juggernaut.

Everything. Do you think that if the Harry Potter books sold only a few million copies combined, there would be a big buzz over the movie? No way. Only by reading the books can you gain an understanding of what an epic the LOTR films will comprise, and what their cinematic reach can be. The books are very very popular, but they also lend themselves to repeat viewings/readings.
