Coming June 19th on DVD and Blu-ray!
Brand New 4K Master!

Spetters (1980) in Dutch with optional English subtitles
• Audio Commentary by Director Paul Verhoeven
• Animated Image Gallery
• Trailers for Spetters and Flesh + Blood

From legendary filmmaker Paul Verhoeven (Robocop) and screenwriter Gerard Soeteman (Soldier of Orange) comes this unrated director's cut of the explosive, fast-paced and thrilling coming-of-age drama. Raw, intense and unabashedly sexual, Spetters is a wild ride that will knock the unsuspecting for a loop. Rien, Eef and Hans are three young guys stuck in an industrial town on the outskirts of Rotterdam. They couldn't be more different except for one thing: their shared passion for motorcycle racing, which each sees as his ticket to a better life. But a deeper passion will soon rule each of their lives, when a sexy, ambitious blonde (Renée Soutendijk, The 4th Man) comes between them and provokes unforeseen events that will rock their worlds. Co-starring Rutger Hauer (Flesh + Blood) and Jeroen Krabbé (The Fugitive).

Trivia: to those who wonder why Heston got 4th billing instead of 2nd since he was (ostensibly) a bigger star than Simmons or Baker in 1958. When offered the role, Heston took awhile to decide whether to accept the role. In the interim, Jean Simmons said yes and her contract stipulated she would get 2nd billing after Peck. Carroll Baker signed on next and negotiated 3rd billing after Peck and Simmons. By the time, Heston said yes, Simmons and Baker were contractually guaranteed 2nd and 3rd billing so the best Heston could get was 4th. Never underestimate the importance of an agent :)

The thing about it is that billing doesn't really matter as much now as it's the roles in the film that people remember not who got what billing. When I think of this film I think of that long fistfight between Peck and Heston along with Burl Ives, Chuck Connors and Jean Simmons exchanges the last 30 minutes of the film.

Yes, that's what the average Joe remembers but in Hollywood (even today), billing is paramount and a real ego massage. Paul Newman and Steve McQueen both insisted on top billing for Towering Inferno and to placate them, the producers had the credits arranged diagonally, with McQueen lower left and Newman upper right. Thus, each appeared to have "first" billing depending on whether the credit was read left-to-right or top-to-bottom. McQueen is mentioned first in the film's trailers. In the cast list rolling from top to bottom at the film's end, however, McQueen and Newman's names were arranged diagonally as at the beginning; as a consequence, Newman's name is fully visible first there. But an actor's standing is always on shaky ground. When The Pink Panther opened in 1964, the credits read starring David Niven and Peter Sellers. 4 years later when Casino Royale opened, the credits read starring Peter Sellers and David Niven as Sellers box office worth had increased.

As to Big Country's most memorable moments, Peck's riding the stallion alone and keeping it to himself is what first comes to mind for me.

From a fan's perspective I can give a rip who has top billing which is my point. Does any of us care how the star feels about their precious ego? Not many of us.

As to Big Country there are other memorable scenes including Burl Ives crashing the party and the beginning opening credits among other scenes as I was just illustrating that movie fans don't remember who has top billing, but specific scenes and roles from each film.

This will be my last word (hopefully) :) on the subject as it deflects from the exciting news of The Big Country's imminent release. I AGREE with you that the majority don't care about billing matters. But I frequent other film related sites where film buffs and film geeks are often obsessed with the subject (especially if they are a fanboy of a certain actor/actress). Remarks like "XYZ is a legendary Oscar winning actor, how dare they give him billing below a one hit wonder like ABC" are not unusual I even know a guy from England who makes lists of billing disparities . I was about 12 years old when the subject first occurred to me as my Uncle and I were walking down the street and passed a theatre showing The Night Of The Iguana. He stopped, horrified and said, "How dare they give billing to a glamour girl like Ava Gardner over a great actress like Deborah Kerr!"

My original remarks were meant to be of passing interest, nothing more. Over and out .....
