Talk about resurecting an old thread...
off course book adaptations cannot be thrown out. the topic was about "original story and idea". the original books count.The problem is, people compare the movie to the book, which, for the most part, isn't a fair comparison. You don't have a budget in a book, so you can describe whatever you want. You have as much time as you want in describing and developing characters. Most movies, you have 2-3 hours.
It is why some people say that novellas and short stories make a better basis for films. It is no coincidence that some of Steven King's better movies (Stand By Me, The Shawshank Redemption) were based on novellas.
