No word about Blue Ray release ,or the Novel for Television scenes,

I much rather have them in I+2 then part 3

I was

hoping for some super Blue Ray set like The Blade Runner set,But this is

Viacom ,and they will milk every cent from us,First another set of the

three Films, then a year latter the Blue ray, then after another year a deluxe

set on dvd and so on,I guess it could be worst, this new set could be Pal only

FYI, The Bits just rumored today that the remastered Trilogy will likely be released around Sept this year(!) -- and expect an official announcement some time soon.

Hope this turns out good.

I've read that Coppola wasn't particularly thrilled with the "Novel for Television" version, so I think its unlikely that that version will ever see the light of day on home video.

"Novel for Television" was just that,I am talking about a new version

of the films with the cut scenes incerted like the Epic video release

but more complete,Most ofThe extra scenes are Great!and are good enough

to be put back in the film(s) I am not sure of Coppolas feeling about

any of these scenes,The only thing I can guess is he dosn't like the scene

with the undertaker and his wife in their apartment, which he cut out

of the epic,and trilogy

My understanding from what I read, and this was quite some time ago, he did the novel for television version as a favor to Paramount, and as kind of an experiment. He never really liked the results and would prefer that the films been seen only in the theatrical cut. I believe the theatrical cuts are what was restored.

I never knew Coppola wasn't keen on the novel version. I assumed since he re-edited the novel version after the 3rd film that he was OK with it. Do you think this was part of his contract for Godfather III?

Travis is correct. The Novel for Television, which is the first two movies cut together into one long movie in chronological order, was done in 1977.

Apparently Coppola did it as a way to raise money to finish Apocalypse Now.

OK. I misunderstood. I was thinking of "The Godfather Trilogy" that was released in 1992 which has all 3 films in chronological order. Did Coppola do the editing on this one?

While you could be right, that could be true for many reasons that don't

have to do with a "New Version",Such as Commercials or cut for tv

The thing I don't get,is why people want to watch these scenes as

a group of cut scenes on a bonus dvd, unremastered and full screen.

The Novel for TV is a different way to watch the first two films

"The Triolgy" isn't cut for TV, "The Novel "has people

walking out of rooms (stuff you can understand why they cut ,with

time limits)

I would like all versions, but if it comes down to losing the flashbacks

in Godfather part 2,or loosing all the cut scenes from both films,I

take the cut scenes

I'm fairly sure the Godfather Trilogy was just the Novel For Television with the Godfather Part 3 tagged on the end as I don't believe there are any flash back scenes in that film.

From what I gathered from the interview, he preferred the Godfather Part 2 playing out flashing back and forth between the early 1900s and the 1950s. He felt that some of the points of comparison between Michael and his Father were lost in the chronological version, and that those flash backs were designed to play next to the 50s scenes
I really don't think of the cut scenes as anything but extraneous. Interesting but not worth being in the actual films.

THE TRILOGY, which I still have on LaserDisc, retains one flashback- when Robert DeNiro's Vito goes to Sicily and exacts revenge. Everything else is shown chronologically.

So the trilogy has ONE flashback and the rest of the movie is in order? Strange.
Honestly I though putting the scenes in chronological order really caused the film to drag. For me they play much better in the flashback style.

I'm hoping when the new release does arrive, it's with different art than what R2 has gotten. The Godfather films are classy, despite originating from a relatively trashy novel. The European cover art looks like it's being sold to the Scarface '83 generation. But then again, Paramount did release a video game, so maybe that's who they're selling these to these days.
And I'd also love to see the chronological/extended saga version released as well. Hell, even if Coppola doesn't care much for it, now's the perfect time to release it. Aside from the restoration and a couple of new extras, it'll help set this apart from the old release. The saga edit has been airing regularly on cable tv for the past decade or so. And with Blu-ray, they can probably stuff the whole thing in SD on one disc, if they don't care enough to restore it.
