Sometime in mid-2007, I was able to view some 4k test scans harvested from the Raiders OCN, and got an inkling of what lay ahead for anyone attempting to bring the film to 4k. Not a simple task.

Now, spending some quality time sampling the four films:

Raiders of the Lost Ark - 1981

Temple of Doom - 1984

The Last Crusade - 1989

The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - 2008

What becomes apparent viewing Paramount's new 4k UHD set is how much film stocks changed during almost thirty years.

Grain structure, very visible in the first couple of films, becomes extremely fine in the fourth, allowing for far more highly resolved imagery. Color becomes more organic with greater depth.

Everything about this new set is first class, which has been further aided by the upgrade to Dolby Atmos for all four productions.

A great deal of effort when into this, and it shows.

And the entire sets works beautifully with projectors.

A fifth disc contains all extras in Blu-ray format.

While I probably need to reference it, I'll not become embroiled in what the story is with light above Mr. Ford and Ms. Allen during the opening of the ark - why it was added, changed, whatever. It simply becomes an odd continuity bit.

I picked up the Best Buy steelbook package, which I presumed would follow the lead of HBO/Warners Game of Thrones set, which had each steelbook, firmly held between hard molded foam.

One might presume that the cost of that packaging was prohibitive. Indy Jones is four steelbooks (3 with single discs, 1 with two) in a outer hard paper shell, with hard paper between the four steelbooks.

A bit less elegant, but the purpose is served.

Overall a terrific 4k release that seems perfect in all regards.

When Indy 5 appears summer 2022, will it lead to a new 5-movie collection?

Is it worth holding out to hold what all presumably be the entire series in one's grasp?

Not for me.

The new 4-movie collection is a dream come true.

Image – 5

Audio – 5 (Dolby Atmos)

Pass / Fail – Pass

Upgrade from Blu-ray -Absolutely

Plays nicely with projectors - Yes

Very Highly Recommended

Did not know they were doing a fifth movie.

I will wait until they are released separately and get the first three. Did not like the 4th movie at all.

But definitely want to purchase the movies and show my support for the investment they have made upgrading these movies to look their best.

Will be nice to revisit them as I have not seen the original trilogy for over a decade now at least.

As a millennial it was a favourite movie growing up and watched it many times on TV.

Since the new movie is Disney it would seem less likely to be a 5 movie Box

though other studios have traded movies to allow such things -- the larger Hitchcock set, the US Kubrick set, etc

Knowing Disney, they might just buy Paramount at some point.

Nah. At least, I hope not, because that would be the end of the Paramount Presents series which is shaping up very nicely these days. Disney seems to be heading toward quasi-monopoly territory. They're like the Clearwater of studios.

Incidentally, I was not happy with the most recent Blu-ray transfer of the first RAIDERS from a few years back. I thought the colors (brownish flesh tones, dullish greens) were inexplicably crumby, worse than the DVD's that were first released. I hope this has been fixed with the 4K and new Blu transfers, as has (apparently) THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING. Any comparisons?

What happened to this release? I ordered mine day one and now Amazon says they don't have it and if you look at their website, they don't have it. Does anyone know what happened?

From thedigitalbits:
"You will all no doubt be well aware that the Indiana Jones 4-Movie Collection technically streets today. But many of you will find that your pre-order copies are delayed in shipping, while other fans got their pre-orders over the weekend. The reason for this is that replication capacity is maxed out at the moment, struggling to keep up with demand. Steelbook product appears to have been replicated first—virtually everyone who got their pre-ordered discs over the weekend had ordered the Steelbook SKU. And retail sources tell me today that most of what you’ll find in stock in your local Target or Best Buy today are Steelbook copies. Regular packaging SKUs should arrive in stores by next week. So don’t be surprised if you walk into your local store today and all they have are Steelbooks. And don’t be surprised if your pre-ordered copies are delayed in shipping by a week or two."

"Now then... we’ve been informed by Paramount that our 4K review copy of the Indiana Jones 4-Movie Collection will ship out sometime around midweek. Which means the earliest we expect to have it in hand is Thursday, but it could be Friday or Saturday. Rest assured, I’ll drop everything when it arrives to get the review completed thoroughly and posted on The Bits for you all to check out. "

Yeah this is why you don't trust Caps-A-Holic snaps. No HDR means the colors are pretty close to the existing blu. It is sharper though.

Pretty sure that the orange has been toned down, very notable here:

There is more detail and more film grain, too so it looks as if Paramount has another winner with this box set.

I am also pleased to hear that these work well in projection which is nice for people who do not have an external tone mapping solution.

Oh the flip side. https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=1&x=776&y=198&d1=15953&d2=15954&s1=169272&s2=169289&l=0&i=14&go=1

Maybe just a shade less yellow, but its still not a pure red. But again, no HDR so not reprentative of how this would look on actual tv.
