Best Actress: Emma Stone, over Lily Gladstone. (I do believe Emma’s performance was better, but Lily’s would have been worthy as well).
Best Actor: Paul Giamatti, over Cillian Murphy

These are critics and not necessarily peers, so neither was too surprising. And, Giamatti has long been a critic's favorite

As far as the acting categories are concerned, here are my Oscar predictions:

Actor:
Cillian Murphy "Oppenheimer"
Paul Giamatti "The Holdovers"
Jeffrey Wright "American Fiction"
Bradley Cooper "Maestro"
Colman Domingo "Rustin"

Actress:
Lily Gladstone "Killers of the Flower Moon"
Emma Stone "Poor Things"
Sandra Huller "Anatomy of a Fall"
Margot Robbie "Barbie"
Fantasia Barrino "The Color Purple"

Supporting Actor:
Robert Downey Jr. "Oppenheimer"
Ryan Gosling "Barbie"
Willem Dafoe "Poor Things"
Sterling K. Brown "American Fiction"
Domenic Sessa "The Holdovers"

Supporting Actress:
Da'Vine Joy Randolph "The Holdovers"
Danielle Brooks "The Color Purple"
Emily Blunt "Oppenheimer"
America Ferrera "Barbie"
Penelope Cruz" Ferrari"

with Murphy, Gladstone, Downey Jr. and Randolph emerging as winners

My preferred nominees list would be quite different. A great many of them haven't even been in the Oscar conversation this season - but all, I think, did outstanding work.

Actor
Swann Arnaud "Anatomy of a Fall"
Russell Crowe "The Pope's Exorcist"
Christian Friedel "The Zone of Interest"
Cillian Murphy "Oppenheimer"
Andrew Scott "All of Us Strangers"

Actress:
Virginia Efira "Other People's Children"
Sandra Huller "The Zone of Interest"
Natalie Portman "May December"
Charlotte Rampling "Juniper"
Kiernan Shipka "Wildflower"

Supporting Actor:
Willem Dafoe "Poor Things"
Ryan Gosling "Barbie"
David Krumholtz "Oppenheimer"
John Magaro "Past Lives"
Florian Schmidtke "Blood and Gold"

Supporting Actress:
Ryan Keira Armstrong "Wildflower"
Scarlett Johansson "Asteroid City"
Luisa Ranieri "Nuovo Olimpo"
Jean Smart "Wildflower'
Barbara Sukowa "Daliland"

And my trophy winners would be Murphy, Shipka, Gosling and Johansson

Even prior to getting acclaim for Sideways, I took note of his many memorable supporting characters, in films like The Negotiator and Saving Private Ryan (both 1998).
Been a fan since Howard Stern’s Private Parts.

My wife and I actually met him at the Shoot ‘Em Up after party and he couldn’t have been more gracious. A true class act.

How did you happen to be at the after party to meet him?

Giamatti seems like the kinda guy who'd be pleasant because a) his dad was famous so he grew up around notables and thus doesn't see fame as a big deal and b) he's not some mega-star. While famous, he's not someone who's gonna attract crowds when he goes to Piggly Wiggly.

Are there any particular films or performances or achievements that you would recognize that are pretty clearly not going to make it in? I know it's not going to happen, but just for fun, what would you do if you could?

Mine would be Abby Ryder Fortson as Best Actress for her work in Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret.

That must have been the first movie that I saw Giamatti in and while he was a ton of fun in that movie, it was a nice surprise to see that he's an absolutely fantastic actor.

Agreed. I've been seeing clips of him on the awards circuit and he's won me over even more with tales of wanting to be an ape in the Planet Of The Apes remake (and after his agents suggest he play a human so his face can be seen, he told them that he'd burn the agency down if he didn't get to play an ape) and that he loves horror movies with his favorite being The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. That's a man after my own heart.

There was a time within the last few years that Giamatti was on Colbert, and they spent a surprising amount of time talking about science fiction books. I knew Giamatti was the real deal when one of the books he mentioned was one of Keith Laumer's BOLO series books.

The Oscars Category That's Never Had a Winner

  • The Academy Awards have a category for Best Original Musical, but it has remained empty because there haven't been enough qualifying films.
  • To be eligible for the Best Original Musical category, a film must be an original musical with at least five original songs that further the storyline.
  • The division between musicals and other genres in the scoring and musical categories at the Oscars has often been complicated, with rules and categories changing over the years.

I'm amazed the Razzies didn't nominate The Marvels for anything. I would take out Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and put in Marvels. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 deserves some recognition here, too. I can't argue with Fury of the Gods or Quantumania though.

I can argue with most of those.

Didn't see the Pooh movie but none of the others are genuinely awful.

I liked the "Shazam" sequel more than the 1st, and none of the other "Worst Picture" noms are truly awful.

Razzies seem eager just to pick on "name" movies/talent for the hits, not because these projects are really terrible.

Razzies wore out their usefulness years ago.
