On a per screen basis Jaws outperformed every movie this weekend except for Loving Highsmith which opened on one screen, but Jaws' $1,846 per screen average was nothing compared to it's $19,048 average on the weekend of June 20th 1975.

Looks like the $3 stunt was a hit even with relatively limited promotion, though many speculate that it just moved some of the business from Friday into Saturday. Ticket admissions for Saturday were about 8 million, which is on par with the entire 3-day portion of past recent Labor Day weekends in 2021 and 2019.

The whole point of the day is to attract those who haven’t been to the movies during the pandemic, in addition to provide life to cinemas at a time when studios don’t have any fresh fare. And headcount-wise, that is a mission accomplished: 8.1M people came out in one day, which is just under the total weekend admissions for the 3-day portion of Labor Day 2019 (8.2M per EntTelligence) and even higher than last year’s 3-day 7.8M, when Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was on the marquee. (Deadline)

Actuals came out and they have Top Gun in first, Bullet Train in 2nd, and Spider-Man in 3rd. Jaws rose to 8th.

So the biggest crowds of the weekend were seeing Avatar, based on those per-screen averages.

Yes, it inflated the average for Avatar. But it's still an indication that a number of people were choosing to spend $15 on a ticket to Avatar vs. $12 on a ticket to other films.

If I had been able to get out these weekend I would have seen both Avatar and Don’t Worry Darling. I’d still like to.

I was actually surprised to see Avatar do so well because, at least locally, it’s not. Out of boredom I was checking the seating chart at my local suburban IMAX all weekend, and they didn’t sell a single ticket for Friday. I’m glad it did better elsewhere.

Weird. My local AMC (no IMAX) had it in 3D and nearly every show was at least 2/3 full all weekend. I went to a Regal so I could see it in IMAX 3D and my screening wasn't that crowded but the earlier 4DX show was packed and so were their 3D and 2D shows.

As an aside, I liked Avatar more seeing it for the first time in probably a decade. I never disliked the movie or anything but today, the last hour really pulled me in despite remembering the broad strokes of what happens.

I still remember the excitement of seeing the midnight opening screening in IMAX 3D back in 2009… I had tickets earlier in the evening to see Carrie Fisher’s show “Wishful Drinking” on Broadway and then walked from the play theater to the movie theater. That was a particularly delightful night of geekdom.

I saw Avatar at its first show on opening day (if there was a midnight show near me, I was unaware) in IMAX and nearly 13 years later, I was in the same room seeing it in IMAX again. They remodeled the building during Covid but the bones of the theater are still the same.

I’d love to see it again at the same theater I originally did - real life responsibilities make taking that trip not really practical for me these days, but I’m glad there was a time in my life when I had the time to travel over an hour each way to see a killer movie on a giant screen.

Cameron has kids now (again?) and I saw a recent interview with him where he said they only knew Avatar as this dopey thing dad made that they saw on streaming, and he told the interviewer that they just got to see it in IMAX 3D now and finally “got it.”

So the biggest crowds of the weekend were seeing Avatar, based on those per-screen averages.
It's also worth noting that Avatar is in significantly fewer theaters (1,860) than either Don't Worry Darling (4,113) or The Woman King (3,765) and it is a much longer film than either of those. So there were more showtimes options available for those movies. Therefore, the audience for Avatar was less spread out.

But it certainly did very well for a 13-year-old film that is available to watch at home.
