Looks like it's all about Spider-Man and Sing 2 as nothing else cracked $1500 per theater other than Licorice Pizza in limited release.

Ghostbusters showing some legs as the only wide release with a week-to-week increase (+17%) rather than drop.

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Now 10th-Highest At US Box Office With $610M; 2021 B.O. Ends With $4.55B, +100% From 2020 – Sunday AM Update

It's insane to me that $610m only gets a movie to 10th place!

I can remember when cracking $400m was a hen's teeth accomplishment - doesn't seem like THAT long ago!

Yeah, I remember when $100 million was considered a blockbuster. Now it's basically the minimum needed to avoid "bomb" status.

I also remember when Sam Raimi's original Spider-Man topped $400 million and everyone was flabbergasted. This film bested that number in only 8 days.

Are you sure? Spider-Man's entire original domestic gross was $403 million and change. Or are you talking about worldwide? That would make more sense.

I'm looking at domestic grosses. No one really cared about worldwide so much back in those days. It was all about North America.

SM (2002) entire domestic gross was just over $400 million which was eye-popping at the time. The current SM beat that in just 8 days.

Right. That makes sense now. I misread your post for a second and thought you said the original passed $400 million in 8 days.

What is really insane to me is that the inflation adjusted domestic gross of the original is $636 million, so the new film is almost on the cusp of surpassing that, even when you consider 20 years of inflation.

Based on the size of these grosses in comparison to anything else this year, I'm guessing that a lot of people went to the movies for the first time since the pandemic in order to see Spider-Man. If they have done so safely, that's a good thing.

It will be interesting to see whether having gone for Spider-Man makes these people more comfortable going to the movies in general or if Spider-Man was a one-off for them and they'll just continue staying at home now.

For some movies, $100m = "bomb"!

Of course, COVID-era standards changed that some, though I suspect the reaction to "NWH" will cause studios to revise those expectations.

"If 'NWH' could make $700m in the pandemic, why can't our movie?"

And that's a good question. Will "NWH" open floodgates and mark the return of COVID-fearers to multiplexes en masse, or is it the "event" exception to the COVID rule?

I think "The Batman" will be an interesting test...

I think it’s that. None of the other MCU movies have come close to this.

I think it speaks to the factors that were already vital prior to the pandemic being out in more force now. For most movies most of the time, there’s no negative consequence to not seeing it in theaters. You just watch it at home a month or two later in a more convenient environment at a reduced cost.

I haven’t seen Spider-Man yet and I really want to, so no spoilers please.

In fact, that’s my next point. That movie is full of what the Russos (directors of the last Avengers movies) said: that “weapononized spoilers” are the biggest factor now in getting people to come out. It’s not enough to be a familiar property with a built in audience; it’s also necessary to clear the hurdle of “why do I need to see this right now?”.

A very large audience has been following the serialized story of the MCU since it began in 2008. It’s been by far the biggest story at the movies since at least 2012.

Black Widow doesn’t push that story forward, it’s a backwards looking prequel. No urgency to see it immediately. Shang-Chi was an origin story with a new character on a new adventure. No urgency to see it immediately. Eternals was the same, a new origin story with a bunch of new characters who are supposedly so powerful that they had to put a throwaway line in the trailers to give an in-universe explanation why if they’re so powerful no one knows who they are. In other words, no urgency to see it immediately.

Spider-Man is the first of the MCU films since the pandemic to actually move forward and tell the continuing story of the Marvel Universe with characters we already care about, with the lure that there may be tons of surprises that you don’t want to get spoiled for you.

I’m not sure that anything will hit that sweet spot again until the next MCU film with returning main characters comes out.

I'm not going to give you any except to say that you are correct in your assessment that huge spoilers exist for this film. I think that was driving a lot of the business in the first weekend.

Now, though, I would venture to say that most people (you being the exception that proves the rule) who are going to see it specifically for the purpose of avoiding spoilers have done so.

At this point, it seems to be riding good will and word of mouth to repeat business. I am a bit surprised by the degree of repeat business it is getting. The film was important to me, and I am vaccinated and boosted, so I could justify putting on a mask and sitting in a crowded theater to see it once on opening night. I cannot make that justification now to see something I have already seen, so I will wait until the Blu-ray is available to see it again. If COVID were not a factor, I would probably go three or four times. I went four times to Far From Home. But we are still in a different time than that.

Anecdotal info, but the advance ticket sales for the opening night showing at my local Dolby Cinema for The 355 are not good at all. A week later, Scream is pretty full. I'm not sure if this really means anything. Sometimes walk-up is better for a lesser-known film, but I'll be curious when I get there on Thursday night to see how many people are actually there.

I agree with this. It is the next one where really big grosses are a possibility. That being said, I think Spider-Man is an exception to the rule because even before COVID, most films do not perform at its level.

Also, The Batman is Batman, but it isn't a sequel to a previous film. So we don't know yet is how audiences respond to this version. No Way Home was obviously influenced by the big cliffhanger on the end of the last film, which isn't a factor with this Batman. The other issue with The Batman in particular is that Warner Bros. has already announced its streaming date will be April 19, 2022. The dedicated fans will show up regardless, but that might siphon off some average moviegoers who will decide to wait.

Still, even if a only small percentage of people who made Spider-Man their first film back in a theater during the pandemic decide to come back sooner rather than later, that would be a big positive for the industry at large.
