Universal is having a nice year with over $1.1 Billion domestic. They have six films over $80 million domestic, led by Jurassic World: Dominion and Minions: The Rise of Gru which are both over $300 million. Others are The Bad Guys, The Black Phone, and Nope (which is likely to go over $100 million). Sing 2 is another, which was released at Christmas 2021, but has earned nearly $90 million of its total in 2022.

Paramount is also over $1.1 Billion domestic, largely due to Top Gun: Maverick at $650 million and counting. They also have Sonic the Hedgehog 2 just short of $200 million and The Lost City over $100 million. January's Scream is also over $80 million.

Each is controlling over 20% of the domestic box office for 2022. The usual leaders, Disney and Warner Bros, have become more interested in streaming and have dropped to third and fourth place. Disney has only had three major releases for the year to date: Doctor Strange 2, Thor 4, and Pixar's Lightyear. Warner has only released four, led by The Batman and anchored by the disappointing Fantastic Beasts 3 (others are Elvis and this weekend's Super Pets).

Technically, Disney has released four movies this year including Death On the Nile in February, which was inherited via their purchase of 20th Century Fox. But your larger point stands.

I think your first point is because of your second point. Disney has less market share because they have released fewer movies. They waited until May to put out their first tentpole of the year, which is extremely unusual for them. Although Lightyear is my favorite of the three by a wide margin, there is no question that it severely underperformed relative to expectations. Nile made $45 million domestically, which isn't great but the results could have been worse considering the Armie Hammer shadow over that movie. So the only two really big theatrical successes they've had this year have been with Marvel.

Disney's slice of the pie will only get bigger with Black Panther and Avatar sequels in November and December respectively, both of which are likely to be huge. They also have a new Disney Animation film Strange World for Thanksgiving and the theatrical re-release of the original Avatar in September. And I'm pretty sure there are some additional releases from 20th Century Not Fox and Searchlight upcoming too, although I can't think of them off the top of my head.

Aware of that, but the 20th Century releases seem to be tracked as a separate distributor. Combining grosses of Disney and 20th Century would still leave Disney in third place.

My $10 admission is included in the $54,890 that A Love Song made near the bottom of that chart. If the film is playing near you and you like quiet character-driven dramas, I recommend it. It was really well-acted and beautifully shot.

While I enjoy the franchises that Disney has acquired over the years, it's good to see some variety in terms of studio success. As we know, competition is good for the industry, and I was afraid that Disney would become too dominant, especially after they purchased Fox.

Rogue One with the biggest per-screen average by far. Disney should have gone wide. They might have won the weekend.

Disney should have gone wide.
The problem is that there aren't enough IMAX screens to do a wide release. I'm not sure if IMAX had something contractually making this an exclusive run, but it is one. In order to go wide, they would have had to put it on regular screens as well, which they don't seem to want to do. But I agree with your point that they could have made more money with a wide release if they wanted to include regular screens as well.

I also find it interesting that Rogue One is still currently available to stream on Disney+. They quietly removed Avatar last week specifically so that it won't be available on the service during its upcoming theatrical re-release, which is going wide. But they don't seem to think that having Rogue One on there is going to dent its IMAX box office. So they are handling these two reissues differently.

Universal also treated two its recent re-releases differently. E.T. went out in a limited number of theaters, primarily in IMAX locations. The only location near me that played it was our AMC with terrible wheelchair seating options which has IMAX. I will not support AMC no matter what for any film, so I didn't go. My local Cinemark, which I frequent, did not get E.T. at all. If Universal had gone wide with E.T. and it had played at Cinemark, I would have almost certainly gone to it, but they chose not to do that. In comparison, Universal is taking Jaws wide next weekend and that one is going to be showing at my Cinemark. I would be interested in hearing the internal studio rationale behind the different strategy for those two movies as well.

Different goals - they’re using the Rogue One reissue to promote the upcoming show, so it’s really about drumming up extra interest among people who might not necessarily be Disney+ subscribers. Plus IMAX usually does repertory for a few weeks this time of year rather than playing new films that don’t attract audiences to that format. If you’re already a D+ subscriber planning on watching the new show, they’ve already gotten what they wanted from you.

For Avatar, the goal is more towards reminding people about the theatrical 3D experience and what a vital component it was towards that particular film - so I think their preference is towards getting people excited again to see a 3D movie on a big screen, and making it slightly harder for people to go “Oh, I see Avatar is at the theater, that reminds me I should see it again, let me watch it on TV”. They want to encourage people to remember the experience of seeing the film, not simply the plot of the film, if that makes any sense.

On another note, the $1,022,798 that Breaking earned in 15th place includes the price of one ticket from me. I really think this is a tremendous film, albeit one that is often very difficult to watch. The whole cast is really good, but John Boyega is especially outstanding in a role that demonstrates a completely different side of his talent than Finn did. I highly recommend it for anyone interested.

I'm seeing that tomorrow.
