    Surrounds too loud in DTS

After calibrating my system using Video Essentials (not DVE), my system, when played back in Dolby Digital, sounds pretty damned good. Everything sounds very well balanced. However, when I play a DVD using DTS, it is invariably much too loud in the surrounds. It is too the point of distraction...

    Record Reviews

Is there any website out there that reviews vinyl releases of new albums, in terms of both musical content, and also sound quality? I am more interested specifically in a site that deals with sound quality of new pressings. Thanks.

    Velvet Goldmine on DVD

I saw this movie on television late one night, and remember liking it quite a bit. I can't seem to find any reviews of the DVD on any of the usual sites (DVDFILE, The Digital Bits), so I'm wondering how the quality of the current dvd is? It looks like it is a bare bones disc...which is...

    New To Turntables...Small Problem

Ok, so today I went out and bought a Creek preamp for a B&O turntable that my parents own, which I moved downstairs. Hooked it all up to my Rotel RSX 1065 reciever and it plays, but, when it does there is a very noticeable humming sound coming out of the speakers. Anybody have any idea what...

    The Vaselines

OK so I was familiar with Nirvana's cover of "Jesus Don't Want Me For a Sunbeam" from their Unplugged album, but I had never heard the original. Recently, on a whim, I listened to the original, as well as "Son of a Gun", "Molly's Lips", and "Lovecraft". These are all great songs. "Son of a Gun"...

In The Aeroplane Over the Sea

I was recently reccomended this album (Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over the Sea) by a friend and it has quickly become one of my favorite albums of all time. It has some of the most gorgeous melodies, and heartfelt lyrics I've ever heard. Anybody else out there love (or hate) this...

How would YOU launch a console?

Maybe this will be fun...let's assume you are in control of a huge company that wants to expand into the console arena when the next generation of hardware comes around. You want to throw lots of money behind this, but you have to allocate your funds in to categories to have a succesful system...

Bass level difference between theaters and home theaters

Whenever I go to see a movie at the theater, it seems that the bass is toned down much lower than I have it set in my HT. Members on the forum describe various passages in movies where you should "feel the bass", and I can definately feel these key scenes on my setup (which is calibrated using...

    Problem with my reciever

Recently my receiver has not been producing sound from any source. When I turn it on, I can hear "air" from the speakers, then the sound is cut off, and then repeats. This basically means that no matter what source, or connections are used, no sound comes out when watching movies/tv/whatever...

    Lowering level of surround speakers?

I have watched movies in my HT for a long time using the surrounds calibrated to 75db with a spl meter and Video Essentials. Lately I have been moving my surrounds around so that they are roughly 7 to 8 ft. behind me, diagnally. When watching certain movies, mainly action flicks, I feel that the...

    It isn't edge enhancement...

Almost every transfer that is put out on dvd has been knocked for having too much edge-enhancement, with a few notable exceptions. Most recently a supposedly reference quality dvd, Episode: 1, was knocked for having excessive edge enhancement by almost every review site. In a thread on this...

    Uncompressed PCM

Why is uncompressed PCM never used on DVD releases? I know of only one instance of it on dvd, in Do The Right Thing, and it sounds phenomenally better than the Dolby digital stereo track. I would much rather have PCM on dvd releases, than silly re-mixes to 5.1 of films that don't really need it...

    Pioneer Elite PRO-510HD

My family is considering purchasing this TV as a Christmas gift, and I was wondering if anybody has had any experience with this set, and if they would recommend it? I watched some DVDs on it at my local HT store and it looked quite beautiful, but I would like a few outside opinions. Would the...
