Hi All,

I went to Best Buy tonight and picked up the Yamaha RX-V661 for $499. While there I noticed they had the HTR-6090 on clearance for the same price. I hadn't done any research on the 6090 so I stuck with the 661. I was wondering if I should go back and swap for the 6090. The two features I want and know the 661 can do are post processing of 5.1 PCM to 7.1 via Dolby/DTS and acceptance of PCM 7.1. Does the 6090 do both of these? Also, is there anything I would be losing by going with the 6090 over the 661? Anything special the 6090 can do that the 661 can't?

Thanks.

The 6090 is a great deal. That is an $1,100 receiver vs. the 661 at $549 MSRP. The 661 is a mid line vs. the 6090 is about at the top of the HTR line. I cannot compare them directly on Yahama's web site but I think I would go back to BB and do a direct comparison. I have the RXV-659 and the 661 is the replacement for it but the 6090 does seem to be a cut above.

Thanks for the reply Mylan. Unfortunately I called Best Buy first thing this morning and it turns out they only had the display model left with no remote or anything. They also checked some others stores and they were all out. Looks like I'm sticking with the 661.

Eh, not the worst thing that could have happened, the 661 is still a great receiver, it has HDMI switching, which mine lacks and it has zone 2 capabilities, which the 6090 lacks.

I've got the 661 setup and I'm happy with it so far. I'll be watching The Guardian on blu-ray tonight so I'll finally get to experience a lossless PCM track. In the end the 661 is just a stopgap measure anyway. In a couple years when I finally ditch my component input only 65" RPTV for a projector I'm sure I'll want a new receiver at the same time. :)
