i have watched alot of dvds and i still cannot put my finger on what this is,if anyone has a screenshot it would be helpful ,this is the only subject i seem to be missing from my nitpicking library.

An artifact is anything that doesn't belong in the picture and originated from a recording or reproduction error.

Speckles are artifacts. Hair-lines in films are artifacts. Edge enhancement coronas are artifacts.
Even, strictly speaking, wrong colours are artifacts.

Comes from Latin, meaning "artificially" (sic!), "not made by nature".

Like the 1st guy said, an artifact is anything that should not be there. This includes:

Hairs
Scratches
Dust
Noise (not to be confused with grain)
Pixellation
