my 2 cents

the Japanese release from 2018 from Twentieth Century is in AVC 1080p 23.976 with No english Subtitles (Japanese subs ) and 2 channel STEREO LPCM (which sounds great )

the specs were erroneously recorded at the other site eg mpeg 2 with 1080i

and the price seems to have surged recently

The late great Nick Redman gave an interview somewhere that there were 2 HD masters for The Egyptian : one from 2005 and one from 2010 . My guess is that The Fox Japan release seems to be using the older master : i saw 1 digitally touched up reel burn marks and a scratch here and there/ The Fox Japan release is more darker , has more "grain" and flesh tones are more pinker. Flesh tones on the twilight time have a slight yellow cast and less grain .

if anyone missed out on The Twilight Time release , I dont think there is much to lose with gettting the Fox Japan release . Usually Japanese Videophiles take meticulous care of their discs if someone wanted to score a second hand copy form amazon japan > Cant see any recent sane offers of The Twilight Time release on Ebay.

I cant see any site comparing the screencaps for the various releases of The Egyptian .
In some ways this scenario reminds me of The seventh Seal : the original Criterion had the thick grain and the newer scan done by David Mackenzie for the BFI was 'cleaner " with finer film grain encoding .

I'm so glad I bought the Twilight Time disc when it first came out and we were all horrified at the high cost! Now, the cost is forgotten but the disc is still here in my house.

Just an aside but has anyone else read the Mika Waltari novel that the film was based on? The movie, which I do adore, is really only a few chapters of the book which takes the reader through the incredible adventures of Sinhue and Kaptah after they are banished from Egypt. They travel extensively with a beautiful Minoan girl, invade the Minotaurs cave in Crete and have so many fascinating adventures in Persia and beyond that I only wish there might someday be a mini-series based on it. To me it's probably one of the best ancient adventure novels ever written.

I certainly don't have a complete set of Twilight Time blu-rays. Don't want one, to be honest. There are several titles of theirs that I have no interest in owning. Of the ones I'm missing, The Egyptian is the only one that I really, really wish I had. I'll have to keep my eyes open a copy of the Japanese release. Thanks, Willy.

Ha, me too! I think it's still the most expensive Blu-ray I've bought, just under $40 (I think) plus p&p to England, but I'm so glad I did. I think the picture looks just great, done before Fox embraced the blue/cyan look.

I bought a version in Europe about seven years ago was DVD, and a decent copy. Paid like 6 euros for a bargain, I think in Denmark.
And the it was a very good copy.........
