I am looking for a cheap spl meter. I see one at rat shack for 40 bucks. are there any cheaper ones?

get the ratshack one.. its the most widely used and you will be able to get a lot of help with charts, weightage and measurements.

MCM ELectronics sells some Tenma models that are a little cheaper, but by the time you shell out for shipping you really won’t be any further ahead. And as Feisal noted, it's not widely known how accurate they are, nor are there any compensation charts.

You might try finding a used Rat Shack meter on eBay.
