Sony's New SS-CSE Dolby Atmos Enabled Speakers

There are quite a few choices now for consumers not wishing to make holes in ceilings to achieve immersive audio in their respective media rooms. Dolby Atmos 'upfirers' are surprisingly effective for those not wishing to do so, and as an owner of a set of Atlantic Technology add-ons, this writer can attest to their effectiveness when playing back OBA soundtracks.

As part of a raft of news put out by Sony Electronics this week, and in anticipation of CES, the company has announced its SS-CSE Dolby Atmos enabled speakers, which are designed to be placed on top of the SS-CS3 floor standing or SS-CS5 bookshelf speakers.

As well as the convenience of placement on or near your LCRs, the company claims that these speakers can easily be fixed to a wall for Atmos soundfield optimization too, or can be deployed as regular surround speakers in a 5.1 or 7.1 setup. According to Sony, this compact design speaker, measuring 7 1/8 x 5 3/4 x 7 1/8 inches, is housed in a strong MDF cabinet, includes a 10cm full range speaker system and a Mica Reinforced Cellular cone, accommodates a maximum input power of 100W, and is capable of a 70Hz - 32kHz frequency range.

Of course, Sony would like you to buy its entire family of CS-Series speakers for aesthetic and performance pairing, and the line is made up of the SS-CS3 floor stander ($199.99 MSRP), the SS-CS5 bookshelf ($149.99 MSRP), the SS-CS8 Center Channel ($149.99 MSRP) and the SA-CS9 active subwoofer ($199.99 MSRP).

Pricing on the new SS-CSE isn't available as of now, but it should be possible to extrapolate and assume it won't be far off the price point of the SS-CS5. This new addition to the range will be available in Spring 2018 from Best Buy, Amazon and Sony authorized retailers.
