Every time I start-up, no matter if I shut the computer down properly or not, my PC brings Scandisk up to do a thorough scan. Anybody know what could possibly be the root of the problem? It seems like such an easy problem.

do you have something like Norton Utilities installed? I had this same problem and it turned out that somehow Norton had been scheduled to scandisk every start up. (Norton Disk Doctor basicaly just scandisks in XP) Hope this helps.

Scandisk has a setting where it can be triggered to scan everytime you start up. That's the extent of my knowledge on THAT issue :) Check your autoexec.bat and see if chkdsk is in there, also, try msconfig at the start-run and check your win.ini and see if it's in there.
