Has anyone reviewed the upcoming dvd of Grease? It will be released in a few weeks, and I would like to hear how the transfer is and the sound.

I'm anxious for a review of this, as well. I dreading that the vocal tracks in the remastered music will sound as echo-ey as they did in the theater.

I think Paramount is really funny about having a review posted until a week or so before its street date release.

Reviews are not supposed to be posted until
this Friday, as mandated by Paramount.

Please do not post links to any site breaking
review date.

I have a review in the can and ready to post.
I'll tell you now that the transfer is *near*
perfect, but the supplements are lackluster.
It looks as if this disc hasn't been revised
since its planned release in 1998.

Ron, can you say (or add to your review) whether the Coke ad is still obscured on the wall during the diner scene?

The transfer is good, but there is some edge enhancement (ringing?). The coke poster is still obscured (my wife noticed this - why is this? Rights issues?).

Sound is pretty good for a 24-year-old movie. A bit tinny at times, but there's some good bass during some scenes, especially when the cars blast some fire from their exhaust pipes. There is also plenty of bird chirping in the surround channels.

All in all, a very enjoyable experience.

Hope it's OK to post this!

Joe

Joe,
Just as long as you aren't a reviewer receiving
screener copies, I don't mind this kind of post.
As policy, we ask that reviewers from other sites
who get screeners not post early reviews here.
Screeners are specifically given out for a particular
site, and I am the official reviewer for this site.
Getting back to Grease...
Aside from the transfer, the Special Edition
itself is a disappointment. I find it hard to
believe the studio couldn't put more effort into
this -- especially Paramount, a studio that always
does quality work and who lately have been doing
a stellar job with their DVD titles. Had this
been any other studio, the DVD would have truly
been a Collector's item.
Will post a review Friday.

My guess is that Paramount is finally distributing the stock original pressed for the first DVD release date.

Ron,

Thanks. I found a copy early, and knowing how much my wife loves this movie, purchased it.

Cheers,

Joe

Regardless of features and sound, since my wife has worn out three different VHS copies of this movie (It seems to be her all-time favorite...sigh), it's a must-buy at our place. And no, she is NOT a beauty-school dropout.
