I have a review in the can and ready to post. I'll tell you now that the transfer is *near* perfect, but the supplements are lackluster. It looks as if this disc hasn't been revised since its planned release in 1998.
The transfer is good, but there is some edge enhancement (ringing?). The coke poster is still obscured (my wife noticed this - why is this? Rights issues?).
Sound is pretty good for a 24-year-old movie. A bit tinny at times, but there's some good bass during some scenes, especially when the cars blast some fire from their exhaust pipes. There is also plenty of bird chirping in the surround channels.
Joe,
Just as long as you aren't a reviewer receiving
screener copies, I don't mind this kind of post.
As policy, we ask that reviewers from other sites
who get screeners not post early reviews here.
Screeners are specifically given out for a particular
site, and I am the official reviewer for this site.
Getting back to Grease...
Aside from the transfer, the Special Edition
itself is a disappointment. I find it hard to
believe the studio couldn't put more effort into
this -- especially Paramount, a studio that always
does quality work and who lately have been doing
a stellar job with their DVD titles. Had this
been any other studio, the DVD would have truly
been a Collector's item.
Will post a review Friday.
Regardless of features and sound, since my wife has worn out three different VHS copies of this movie (It seems to be her all-time favorite...sigh), it's a must-buy at our place. And no, she is NOT a beauty-school dropout.
