I am using 6.1 as for previous versions you can automatically log into my account by clicking the log in as button. Other people share use of this PC and I don't want them to be able to log into my account. Is there a way I can prevent it? I want to have to supply a password to access my account, but I can't seem to set this up. Am I missing something or am I screwed?

Hi James,

Open Messenger by either right clicking on the icon in the tray at the bottom and clicking on "Open MSN Messenger" or by clicking Start, go to Programs and click on MSN Messenger 6.1.

Click on Tool and then Options.

Two places you want to look:

1. Privacy tab. Make sure that "Always ask me for my password..." box is checked and you may want to check the other two boxes below that.

2. General tab. Clear the check on the box "Allow automatic sign in when connected..."

I believe that should do it for you. Restart the machine and try accessing Messenger to make sure that the settings changes worked.

Hope that helps...

Somewhat related to this topic, does anyone know where I might be able to grab a copy of MSN Messenger 5.0? For some reason, the versions after that don't jive too well with the screen reader I use on my computer.

Hi Casey,

I'm not in the mood for searching for earlier versions of MSN Messenger right now, but if no one else can find it, I suggest downloading Trillian, which is a third-party AOL IM, ICQ, MSN, IRC, and Yahoo! client. There is a free version, and you can download it at http://www.trillian.cc/.
