Interesting DVD UPDATE I received today.
One of my favorite holiday films, Mr. Magoo's
Christmas Carol is being re-released in September.
It was released a year ago by GoodTimes Video.
I bought a copy and was only mildly impressed by
its audio and video quality.
I see that it is being re-released by SONY MUSIC.
Here are the specs (which look exactly the same
as the GoodTimes version)...
============================
Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol
ID: LVD54333DVD $11.25 Not Rated
UPC: 074645433394 60 min. 1962
Preorder: 8/20/2002 Sony Music
Street: 9/24/2002 Animation
Full Frame - Color - English - Region 1
Jack Cassidy, Jim Backus, June Foray, Les Tremayne, Morey Amsterdam,
Royal Dano - Director: Abe Levitow
A family favorite for almost forty years, this animated special marks a
merry marriage between of the screen's greatest cartoon characters, Mr.
Magoo, and the heart-warming holiday tale, "A Christmas Carol." Jim
Backus lends his unmistakable voice to the lovably near-sighted Magoo,
who stars in a Broadway version of the Charles Dickens tale, impeccably
cast as the crotchety old Ebenezer Scrooge. With music by Jules Styne
and Bob Merrill, Oscar nominees for the song "Funny Girl," it features
the vocal talents of Jack Cassidy, Morey Amsterdam, and June Foray.
Cast/Crew Biographies; Bonus Mr. Magoo Short
==============================
I am probably going to repurchase it, but
wonder if this is an all-new transfer.

Cool! I passed last year because I saw the GoodTimes name on the case. Hopefully Sony do a better job.

But again the question is....

Are these going to be remasters?

My gut instinct tells me no.

No, they're not. In fact, Sony has nothing to do with these discs. They cut a deal with Classic Media to distribute their stuff to DVD, so these are just the same discs Classic Media has already made.

After comparing both discs, (the Goodtimes & Sony Wonder discs), I've decided to give the earlier "Goodtimes" DVD to my grandchildren and save the newer disc for my collection.
The new disc clearly has the video framed better - (More picture information is visible) and the picture quality has improved.:emoji_thumbsup:

Ron, did you ever get the newer SONY "magoo..."?
If so, how does the transfer compare to the Goodtimes...?

Also, I'd like to ask...is this DVD edited? I know that all (or most) of the VHS releases omitted such footage as the song "It's Great to Be Back" (or whatever it's called)...

Hummmm....

Just watched my 10+ year old VHS (Paramount #12693) copy last night, a Holiday favorite for sure, and the introductory song is Magoo singing "Its great to be back on Broadway".

I sure as heck don't recall if there are other songs missing, but it runs 52 minutes, which seems about right for a 1 hour TV production.

I have been meaning to get the DVD.....now I need to figure out which one to get!

Which song was that? I only knew Magoo from TV airings as a kid, and those happened in the Seventies. As such, I can't compare to the original broadcast. I DO know this one includes the bits before and after "Carol" itself that sets up the notion it's a stage production - I never saw those as a kid...

I have both versions of Mr. Magoo's Christmas
Carol
, but I have yet to open the new Sony DVD.
This is what happens when you have discs to review
every single day of your life. :)
I can only tell you this....
The song It's great to be back BACK BACK is
indeed on the DVD release (I know it is on the
original release). It is the song that opens the
film as Magoo heads to the theater.
I know that on some TV broadcasts the song was cut
in order to cater to time restraints.
This is one of my all-time favorite Christmas
favorites and I hope somebody has the
opportunity to compare both versions. Me, I am
just too damn busy. Sorry.

Ahhh, Paul, thanks.

Since this thread is a few months old, I only
started reading it halfway down. Thanks for
pointing this out to me.
