I just ordered this title, but a day after the shipment I just realized that there is allso a SE version (and its only a dollar more expensive), so does anyone know what is the difference between the original DVD edition and the SE (besides the commentary)?

thank you

The old version also has the theatrical trailer which is not on the "Special Edition". What's so special about it?

In that case, I'm glad that I ordered the old version..

and what about the picture? Is it the same transfer
or a new one?

Holy smokes. The new SE has the ORIGINAL theatrical 2.0 mix. The new SE has an anamorphically enhanced transfer, which the older version does not.

It says "widescreen" on the cover, so what do you mean?

you mean it's letterboxed?

So i get just 300 pixels high images?

The new disc is anamorphically enhanced for widescreen TVs, the first release is not. If you don't have a widescreen TV, I suppose the earlier disc might be okay for you, although the transfer is better on the SE. Extras: Commentary track with Norman Jewison and Ted Neeley. Interview with lyricist Tim Rice. Photo gallery.

Except the original (film) was relased on 3 track and 4 track magnetic prints, not in Dolby Stereo. There was no ORIGINAL theatrical 2.0 mix. It escapes me at the moment if the surround track carried any signal, I beleive it was LCR only. BTW This is not speculation as I have had my hands on both 3 track and 4 track mag prints in the past.

That said, the new version is anamorphic and at least an order of magnitude better in IQ then the original.
(But that's not saying much :frowning: because the original was pretty bad.)

So in what way is the transfer better? (better colors, smoother contrast?)

I recall the soundtrack album was mostly hiss, with some music in the background.

Someone will really need to compare the two DVD's audio and decide which has better audio. Authenticity is secondary to quality in a case like this, IMO.

Is it against the rules of this forum to post
screencaps?

If not, does anyone have their DVD's around to post
a comparison of some frame between the two transfers.

I nobody has both versions, one can post one, and someone else can post the other version of the same frame

of course only if it's not a problem..

Somewhat less EE and fewer comresssion artifacts on the new one.

Also the new one is 16x9 enhanced, the old one was not.

Even then, the new one is still pretty ugly.
