Well, after much research and debate over when's the best time to buy, I have pulled the trigger on a new Toshiba 42H81. I still break out in a cold sweat whenever I read some posts here and at the 'Spot about ghosting, vertical lines, and uneven blackness around the edges; hopefully, my set will have a minimum set of "defects". (fingers and toes crossed) As many have quoted here, "a little bit of knowledge can be a dangerous thing" not to mention disturbing to peace of mind!
Many thanks to all that have posted here and at the 'Spot regarding Toshiba RPTV lines - the comparisons, praises, and criticisms were frustrating at times, but ultimately useful.
Davepr - thanks for your thoughts on the Hitachi but unfortunately, the addition of HT furniture, my room specs, and my budgeted amount for this indulgence left the 43UWX10B just shy of an adequate fit. Too bad - like you, I do like some of the features it offers.
Delivery is set for the middle of this week. All those DVD's that have languished in 21" 4:3 existence will have new life, I hope!:D
I'll share my experiences with the set after the honeymoon.

You should be able to get a very good picture just by turning down contrast/brightness/sharpness. Start out in the movie mode and tweak from there. I've had a Tosh TW56x81 for 2 years and love it, no problems, great picture.
