Probably a very dumb question. My Pioneer volume display is always negative decibels. The lower the number the louder it gets.The Pioneer SVX -912. Sound great, though.I must start using spell chex. LOL.

Each company does it differently. Pioneer, Marantz, and many others start at like -95 and go to -0 to -5. Onkyo does the opposite and starts at 0 and goes up to -86 I believe.

There's even some logic behind it :).
They design the amplifier and call the amplification it delivers "0dB". Then they add a volume control which will, by definition, diminish the amplification by a variable amount of deciBels. The electronic characteristics of the pot-meter they choose, establishes the amount of deciBels per turning degree.
