My owner's manual for the JVC I-ART 27" says that a progressive scan DVD player will not work properly on the tv. Does that mean that it won't work at all, or that I just won't get the progressive scan benefits?

It means in progressive mode it will not work properly. My old 27" set will split the picture into two B&W screens if I call up progressive on my 70BK.

You got it. Every progressive player I know let's you decide what mode you want to use. Some players have the selector switch in the back and others let you do it through the remote. Many manufacturers of higher end but non-HDTV sets are trying to quell the consumer confusion over progressive. It (Progressive) feeds through the component outputs only and because many decent sets now have component inputs some people think they will get progressive output but that is wrong. But there is nothing in the L'art series I know of which would prevent you from using ANY player so long as it is in interlaced mode.
