Hi all,
I have been a big fan of audio reproduction for many, many years. This past week I was fortunate to have the chance to both visit the Martin Logan speaker facility in Lawrence, Kansas and also spend some time at Gayle Sanders house and experience his personal system.
I say experience because that is truly what it was. His main speakers are a pair of Martin Logan Statement E2's. As a pair they sell for seventy thousand dollars. Powering them were two Theta monoblocks each rated to (as I recall) 400 watts. The associated electronics ranged from a Theta control unit, Theta CD player, top of the line Sony SACD player, (some more stuff I can't quite remember) and cables that cost more than my Honda.
The room itself was custom made for the ultimate in sound reproduction. It was about 45' long, 25' wide' and 15' tall. It was treated with acoustic sound panels and tube traps to help with overall absorbtion and diffusion. For a picture you can actually go to the Martin Logan web site (www.martinlogan.com) and look up the information on the Statements. The pictured room is his basement.
Suffice it to say that the system was incredible. I cannot put into words what I heard. It was some sort of audio epiphany. 'Wow' does not even come close. The electrostatic design for all sound down to 200Hz allowed for an amazing experience. While the 16 woofer drivers added that little extra omph. The frequency response of the statements is rated from 18Hz to 22.5 KHz at + or - 2db up to over 120db. I felt bass roll through my body. Honestly I think it still is.
If you ever, ever get the chance to experience the Martin Logan Statements take it. Run at it. Jump on it. It is amazing.
