Every night at home I'm always worried about what the next day is going to have in store for me, I can never ever go into work with a clear mind, and that sucks.

I am torn on this one too. I happen to love my job and the people I work with, and am compensated very well. Yes, I do realize how lucky I am.

So on one hand I'd encourage Alan to take some action where he is now to wring some amount of joy out of the hours he is spending or move on.

On the other hand, to echo others, you have a job. I know many people with advanced degrees and 10+ years experience that have been looking for months.
