So I’m in the process of breaking up with my girlfriend and I’m quite excited that the relationship is over. I think it is time to make a mix tape. But instead of the typical depressed, break-up, bluesy type music I want something a little more upbeat and positive. I’m celebrating more than I'm acting mope.

Below is a list of some of the songs I’m thinking of. I know that these barely scratch the surface. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I’m open to any genre but preferably some rock, hip-hop or Brit pop.

The Who – I’m free
P.O.D. – Alive
Crazy Town – Revolving door
White Stripes – There’s no home for you here
Tom Petty – Change the locks
Tool – Ticks & Leeches
Weezer – Tired of sex / Butterfly lyrics
Memphis Bleek – Is that your chick?

Thanks
Tom

not sure if you've heard of them, but Chris McCarty Band has a song called 'Stuck' about getting out of a relationship he was stuck in, and being happy it's over.

Glad to Break-up songs:
(Most of these I used myself at some point or other.) I have quite an eclectic collection of music and this is only the beginning for now....

Olive – Liberty
Phil Collins - In the Air Tonight
Alan Parsons Project – Winding Me Up
Chris Isaak – Please
Faithless – Crazy English Summer
The Monkees – Star Collector
Wynonna Judd – Don’t You Throw That Mojo On Me (with Kenny Wayne Shephard)
Madonna – You’ll See
Weird Al Yankovic – I’m So Sick Of You
You tell a joke and forget the punchline
Why you always wastin' my time?
Hey baby, trust me, you just disgust me
Your hair's a mess and your make-up's crusty
I don't know too many females
Who make a habit of biting their toenails
Wo, every time you call, you drive me up the wall
Honey, just the sight of you makes my flesh crawl
I'm sure we'd be happy together
If only one little thing weren't true
Oh baby, I yi yi yi yi
I'm so sick of you

You drink the milk right from the carton
What are you, in kindergarten?
You're belchin' everywhere, foulin' up the air
Then you use my razor to shave your back hair
You don't have an ounce of class
You're just one big pain in the neck
How much more can I take now, give me a break now
You even snore when you're wide awake now
You tell all your friends we're the perfect couple
Well, maybe you should get a clue
'Cause baby, I yi yi yi yi
I'm so sick of you
Baby, you're so nauseatin'
I yi yi yi yi
I'm so sick of you

And when you softly call my name
It's like I’m listenin' to that squeaky chalk sound
And when you look at me that special way
It's hard for me to keep my lunch down
And when you’re askin' me what I'm thinkin', honey, usually I'm thinkin'
How I'd really like to tie your head completely up in duct tape
So I wouldn't have to listen to you asking me those stupid questions
Over and over again

Well, that disgusting noise you make when you laugh
Gives me a throbbing migraine
(Can't stand you, I just can't stand you)
Until you came along I never dated anyone
This low on the food chain
(Can't stand you, I just can't stand you)
You've got inhuman body odor
You've got the hair of a boxing promoter
Yeah, your teeth are all yellow, your butt's made of Jell-O
You woke up in a puddle, droolin' on your pillow
I hate the way you crack your knuckles
I hate your whiny loser girlfriends too
But mostly I yi yi yi yi
I'm so sick of you
Really now, you're aggrevatin'
I yi yi yi yi
I'm so sick of you
Not to mention irritatin'
I yi yi yi yi
I'm so sick of you
Well, now won't you give my best regards to Satan
I yi yi yi yi
I'm so sick of you

I'm so sick of you
I'm so sick of you
I'm so sick of you
You make me sick

(Can't stand you, I just can't stand you) I'm so sick of you, now
(Can't stand you, I just can't stand you) I'm so sick of you, now
(Can't stand you, I just can't stand you) I'm so sick of you
(Can't stand you, I just can't stand you) I'm so sick of you, now
(Can't stand you, I just can't stand you) I'm so sick of you, now
(Can't stand you, I just can't stand you) I'm so sick of you, now
(Can't stand you, I just can't stand you) I'm so sick of you, now

Elton John – Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Olive – Creature of Comfort (change he to she)
Delerium – Run For It
Pink – There You Go
Crush - Jellyhead
Michael Jackson – Beat It (really good pick-me up and depending on how you interpret the lyrics, it works really well!)
Collective Soul – Run (such a beautiful anthem song – inspiring, not sad)
Elton John – Someone Saved My Life Tonight
The Monkees – So Goes Love
Celine Dion – Misled
Betty Boo – Doin’ the Do (upbeat song, rap-y)
Will To Power – It’s My Life
You think you could possess my soul
You knew that I loved everything about you
But now I’m gonna take control and live my life and all I’m free without you
You tried to control me, you had my life balancing on a string
I learned from what you told me cuz it’s my life and you don’t mean a thing
CHORUS
You don’t, don’t mean too much to me (you don’t mean that much)
It’s my life
You don’t, don’t mean too much to me
It’s my life
You don’t, don’t mean too much to me
It’s my life, my life

I used to lie awake at night and couldn’t get to sleep just thinking of you
But now that I can see the light, I’m guilty just to think that I could love you
At night I stared with longing.
You spent your time telling me what to do
I laugh at you with longing, cuz it’s my life and I am over YOU.

CHORUS

Weird Al Yankovic – One More Minute
Aahh....

Well I heard that you're leavin' (leavin')
Gonna leave me far behind (so far behind)
'Cause you found a brand new lover
You decided that I'm not your kind (aahh..)

So I pulled (I pulled) your name out (name out) of my Rolodex (oohh..)
And I tore all your pictures in two
And I burned down the malt shop where we used to go
Just because it reminds me of you (dippity dippity doo)

That's right (that's right) you ain't gonna see me cryin'
I'm glad (I'm glad) that you found somebody new
'Cause I'd rather spend eternity eating shards of broken glass
Than spend one more minute with you

I guess I might seem kinda bitter
You got me feeling down in the dumps
'Cause I'm stranded all alone in the gas station of love
And I have to use the self-service pumps

Oh, so honey, let me help you with that suitcase
You ain't (you ain't) gonna break my heart in two
'Cause I'd rather get a hundred thousand paper cuts on my face
Than spend one more minute with you

I'd rather rip out my intestines with a fork
Than watch you going out with other men
I'd rather slam my fingers in a door (yah)
Again and again and again and again and again

Oh, can't you see what I'm tryin' to say, Darlin...

I'd rather have my blood sucked out by leeches (leeches)
Shove an icepick under a toenail or two
I'd rather clean all the bathrooms in Grand Central Station with my tongue
Than spend one more minute with you

Yes, I'd rather jump naked on a huge pile of thumbtacks
Or stick my nostrils together with crazy glue
I'd rather dive into a swimming pool filled with double-edged razor blades
Than spend one more minute with you

I'd rather rip my heart right out of my ribcage with my bare hands
and then throw it on the floor and stomp on it 'till I die………
Than spend one more minute with you

The Monkees – No Time
Alan Parsons Project – Eye In the Sky

2 great ones: Ween -Piss Up a rope & Nilsson- Youre breaking my heart

My dinner's on fire while she watches TV
And if you've ever wondered what it's like to be me
She takes all my money and leaves me no smokes
Yells at my buddies and insults my folks
I'm breakin' my back doin' the best that I can
She's got time for the dog and none for her man
And I'm no dope, but I can't cope
So hit the fuckin' road and piss up a rope

You can piss up a rope
And you can put on your shoes, hit the road get truckin'
Pack your bag, I don't need the ag
On your knees you big, booty bitch start suckin'
You ride my ass like a horse in a saddle
Now you're up shits creek with a turd for a paddle
And I can't cope -- piss up a rope

Uh, you can piss up a rope and feel the pissy dribble
You can piss up a rope and watch me giggle
For the last 6 months I been packin' your bag
You can wash my balls with a warm, wet rag
Till my balls feel smooth and soft like silk
I'm sick of your mouth and your 2 percent milk
And I'm no dope, but I've lost all hope
So hit the fuckin' road and piss up a rope

You can piss up a rope
And you can put on your shoes, hit the road get truckin'
Pack your bag, I don't need the ag
On your knees you big, booty bitch start suckin'
You ride my ass like a horse in a saddle
Now you're up shits creek with a turd for a paddle
And I can't cope -- piss up a rope

You're breakin' my heart by Nilsson

You're breakin' my heart
You're tearin' it apart
So fuck you
All I want to do
Is have a good time
Now I'm blue
You wanna boogaloo
Run down to Tramps
Have a dance or two--ooh!
You're breaking my heart
You're tearin' it apart
But fuck you
You're breakin' my heart
You're tearin' it apart
Ooh!--ooh!--
You stepped on my ass
You're breaking my glasses too
You wanna drive my car
Buy a lot of stuff
I've had enough
Of you--ooh!
I'm goin' insane
There's no one to blame
So fuck you
You've gotta have your way
There's nothin' left to say
There's nothin' left to do--ooh!
You're breakin' my heart
You're tearin' it apart
So fuck you
You've gotta have your way
There's nothin' left to say
There's nothin' left to do--ooh!
You're breakin' my heart
You're tearin' it apart
But I love you
(Do-do-doots)

Two peppy, upbeat breakup tunes from Aimee Mann:

Choice in the Matter-
(And if this is one of your ten thousand dollar hours
Don't forget to write it down
Help is on the way)

Skip the cloak and dagger bit
Don't you know we're sick of it
As much as I would like to stay
The message light just blinks away
And while I'm here you won't push play

So you leave me no choice in the matter
You leave me no choice in the matter
You leave me no choice in the matter
You leave me no

Option to indulge in this
Exercise in cowardice
Ignorance without the bliss

'Cause you leave me no choice in the matter
You leave me no choice in the matter
You leave me no choice in the matter
You leave me no

-guitar solo-

'Cause I know where this boat will go
Pulled down by the undertow
It's lucky I know
How to row

So row, row, row your boat
Gently down the stream
I hope you drown and never come up

'Cause you leave me no choice in the matter
You leave me no choice in the matter
You leave me no choice in the matter
You leave me no

I Should Have Known-
I should thank you almost
no one could kill it off until you bled it
but I got rid of that ghost
'though certain habits remain imbedded
with the shadow of a doubt
but baby it was you who fed it
and I don't know what else to say
but I think you get it.

I should've known
it was coming down to this
I should've known
you would betray me but without the kiss
I should've known
the kind of set-up it is.

And always isn't always
when it's not your photograph that I've been keeping
but you still live in those days
when I'd stay awake just to watch you sleeping
you delivered that blow
but it left a mark on me that you're not seeing
and I don't know what else you hear
but it's not me weeping

I should've known
it was coming down to this
I should've known
you would betray me but without the kiss
I should've known
the kind of set-up it is.

I should've seen the cracks in the ceiling
and the mirror covered up with dust
but I was busy talking on the phone
I should've seen the obstacles but I said,
this house was built for us
hello
is anybody home?

I should've known
the minute that we hit the wall
I should've known
the writing was upon the stall
I should've known
'cause Rome was starting to fall

and I should thank you, almost.

And of course, there's Fleetwood Mac's Go Your On Way

E-Type - "I'll Find A Way"

Once there were shadows around me
ghosts were howling on the prowl
You know there are things to be done
no one around to care
So give me all of them, and I will follow them
There won't be no one around to see cause
I'm the Last Man Standing

Brightness falls and then you're gone with the wind
You won't see me again
Darkness calls this is a fight I can't win
I'll leave you in the rain

I'll find a way
Gotta move on and I will survive
I'll find a way
No matter what I will stay alive

Now we have searched for the meaning
I'm set adrift again
Who knows what will come from the mission
I will still be there
Don't tell me what to do, this is the way you know
There won't be no one around to see cause
I'm the Last Man Standing

Brightness falls and then you're gone with the wind
You won't see me again
Darkness calls this is a fight I can't win
I'll leave you in the rain

I'll find a way
Gotta move on and I will survive
I'll find a way
No matter what I will stay alive

Alan Parsons Project - "You Lie Down With Dogs"

excerpt:
Get out and find yourself another lover
Why don't you find yourself another lover
Open up your eyes and realize
You don't mean nothing to me I'm not your mother
You gave me all that you had to give
But there's a whole lotta fish in the sea

Sloth "Billygoat":

Visions
In my head
Counting all
Stinking dead
Memories
I have left behind, behind
Dreary night
Barren land
Centrifuge
My desperate hands
My lonely hands

Leprosy
Takes it toll
Never mind
What is sold today
The marketplace has found its fool today
Wanted more
Paid for less
Still my thirst
Dies for this mess

I take away
Useful meaning more
Useful meaning more
Until there's nothing left

Visions
In my head
Counting all
Stinking dead
Today
The marketplace has found its fool today
Wanted more
Paid for less
Still my thirst
Dies for your mess

I take away
Useful meaning more
Useful meaning more
Until there's nothing left...

I will
Breathe again
On my own
On my own
Until there's nothing left
Until there's nothing left
Until there's no one left

I'm going to put in a suggestions for:

Outkast - Hey Ya! (If you haven't heard 1000 times too many already)

And my personal favorite:

Beck - Sing it Again

Yeah, it's a little downbeat, but I really like it!

Adam Sandler from "The Wedding Singer"

You don’t know how much I need you.
While you’re near me I don’t feel blue.
And when we kiss I know that you need me too.
I can’t believe I found a love that’s so pure and true.

But it all was bullshit.
It was a goddam joke.
And when I think of you linda,
I hope you fucking choke.

I hope you’re glad with what you’ve done to me.
I lay in bed all day long feeling melancholy.
You left me here all alone, tears running constantly.

Oh somebody kill me please,
Somebody kill me plee-ase,
I’m on my knees,
Pretty pretty please kill me.

I want to die.
Put a bullet in my head.

Amen. Greatest break-up album ever!

Can't believe no one's mentioned this classic yet. I wouldn't call it peppy, but it's not depressing - very much an affirmative statement:

Bob Dylan - "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right"

It ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
It don't matter, anyhow
An' it ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
If you don't know by now
When your rooster crows at the break of dawn
Look out your window and I'll be gone
You're the reason I'm trav'lin' on
Don't think twice, it's all right

It ain't no use in turnin' on your light, babe
That light I never knowed
An' it ain't no use in turnin' on your light, babe
I'm on the dark side of the road
Still I wish there was somethin' you would do or say
To try and make me change my mind and stay
We never did too much talkin' anyway
So don't think twice, it's all right

It ain't no use in callin' out my name, gal
Like you never did before
It ain't no use in callin' out my name, gal
I can't hear you any more
I'm a-thinkin' and a-wond'rin' all the way down the road
I once loved a woman, a child I'm told
I give her my heart but she wanted my soul
But don't think twice, it's all right

I'm walkin' down that long, lonesome road, babe
Where I'm bound, I can't tell
But goodbye's too good a word, gal
So I'll just say fare thee well
I ain't sayin' you treated me unkind
You could have done better but I don't mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don't think twice, it's all right
