Region-free DVD player as main unit

After numerous seaches (both here, other forums and Google), I still can't determine whether there's an all-region capable player that is solid and reliable enough to replace my current player, and to be used as my only DVD player for NTSC discs also. The Philips 642 sounds decent, but then...

Anamorphic Downconversion (if anybody still cares...)

Some of us still watch anamorphic DVDs on 4:3 displays :b so can somebody update me on how various brands of player handle it? I haven't been in the market for a DVD player since the good ol' days when this was a hot topic, so I'm not sure whether things are still the same (i.e. Sony smooth...

Truffaut's Day for Night going out of print?

Anybody know why this Warner Bros. disc would be going OOP? I saw it listed on this "Discontinued DVDs" site: http://www.hometheaterinfo.com/disconti.htm

Monty Python short film mystery (travelogue before Life of Brian)

With the excitement generated by the recent announcement of Life of Brian's impending re-release, I started thinking about a short film which was screened before the main feature on its original theatrical run. I saw Life of Brian in Australia originally, so I'm not sure if this short preceded...

    Metal fans: Best DVDs?

As a metal fan (i.e. "real" heavy metal, including thrash, speed and death metal, plus grindcore etc., as opposed to "NuMetal"), I was wondering whether there are any decent DVD releases out there, especially concert DVDs. Dark Tranquillity (a very good melodic death band, from Sweden I...

Mon Oncle, Hulot back in print soon, new Playtime and Jour de Fete to come?

Went to Criterion's site to find out about the recent OOP announcement re: Hitchcocks and Straw Dogs. Couldn't see anything about those but saw an announcement re: the Tatis which blew my mind! Mon Oncle and Hulot's Holiday coming back, and a mysterious hint regarding new editions of Playtime...

Opening up a computer for the first time: how do I not damage anything?!

I just received my new Dell 4600 which has one 80 gig hard drive, and I'm about to install a second 80 gig drive which was shipped separately (Dell Home/Home Office won't ship the 4600 with a second hard drive already installed, unlike Dell Small Business). Anyway, I have never opened up a...

DVD Rot! My Sweet Hereafter has gone to the sweet hereafter

I thought it couldn't happen to me! Whether it really should be called DVD Rot or a more accurate name, this is a phenomenon I had tried to ignore and hope was simply a case of people being careless with their discs and mistaking scratches and fingerprints for more mysterious deterioration of...

Marty DVD: is a scene missing?

A poster on Amazon.com complains that a scene with Clara's parents is missing from the DVD and VHS releases of Marty (1955). Can anybody confirm this?

Aficionados of Iranian Cinema: Help Needed

As part of a series of video nights I'm running with some friends, I'm planning an evening of Iranian films. The selection process is difficult because Iranian cinema has been so rich and varied in recent years. I feel I would be remiss if I did not show any Kiarostami, but which film to...

Kino has their German horror silents box set details up at their site, and for anybody who, like me, was burned by Elite's German Masterworks fiasco a couple of years ago, get ready to drool (presuming the frame rates are correct): Kino German Horror box set

Anybody get hold of the UK Star Trek TNG packaging?

The US set is excellent but the packaging, IMHO, is even worse than it looked in the pre-order images. Looks a bit like the old Columbia House library boxes, very cheap-looking, and doesn't even use the correct TNG typeface.

Evil Dead SE hi-res scans so I can put my BOTD disc in a keepcase?

I want to keep my BOTD disc in a keepcase so as not to have to handle the book itself repeatedly. Anybody have or know of hi-res scans of the non-BOTD SE cover? Thanks in advance!

Is the EVIL DEAD mono track available on any DVD?

I was presuming the Elite edition has it but I wanted to be sure before picking it up.

Is Elite's Evil Dead going OOP?

With the new Anchor Bay SE due soon, is Elite's highly regarded disc disappearing any time soon? I want to get hold of it in addition to the new disc so I have the alternative AR (and I'm not sure if the AB disc will have the original mono audio track?), but if it's going to stay on the shelves...

Grain Removal in Snow White: a dangerous precedant

Watching the Snow White DVD last night, I was, like so many others here, dazzled by the image quality (not to mention the exceptional supplementary materials and their presentation, on which Disney should be commended!) However, the process by which the grain was removed from the feature, along...

    Fawlty Towers: no reviews???

This is the release of the year for me, and I'm anxious to get some inkling of how the discs are. My main concern is that the R1 set is on three discs while the UK version is on four. Maybe this is just due to the different storage requirements of Pal vs NTSC, but if, as somebody suggested a...

Metropolis: a hint of things to come

Just saw the screening of the restored METROPOLIS at Los Angeles County Museum of Art last night (the second night of an astonishing Lang retrospective, first night was SPIES, the almost 3 hour version, with a small orchestra which was also a real treat). Kudos to Robert Israel for his marathon...

    Kino Silents: quality?

I want to pick up the German classics (Faust, Last Laugh and a third whilch escapes me at the moment). Are these good discs? I am very excited also about the John Barrymore version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde coming on Oct. 9. It looks like a great disc with interesting extras (...

The Creeping Flesh: who controls the rights (Cushing, Lee, non-Hammer horror)

Often overlooked amongst the Cushing/Lee vehicles, perhaps because it's an Amicus film and not part of the Hammer canon, this is a fascinating title and one I'd love on disc. Does anybody know if Columbia still owns this one? I hope Anchor Bay can get their hands on it (I'm besotted with...
