I have Nero9 but sometimes when I'm trying to re-code an AVI file to Mpeg for a DVD it will not be able to do it, it will play fine in the editing suite but when it comes to recode it fails, is there a free or not-so-free re-coding program out there that is more reliable than Nero?

TMPGEnc 2.5 is a $37 solution for MPEG-2 encoding (MPEG-1 encoding is free with the downloadable unlicensed version). There's a new version 3 now that has some more features, so browse around that product page.
