Why is The Shadow (the Alec Baldwin film) available only in Full Screen?

It wasn't shot in 1.33:1 was it?

Nope, The Shadow was 1.85 ratio. No idea why it wasn't released in it's OAR. It is available in it's OAR on LD, as I have the DTS LD and it is 1.85

Because Universal decided to put only a full screen transfer on the two versions of the DVD. Being that it was released in 1997, it was not engineered with a wide audience in mind.

If they released the DVD in 2000 or 2001, it would have likely been 1.85:1, 16x9. Look at any studio's early ouput and you'll see that 99% of it is at the best...mildly good.

The Region 2 UK version has an anamorphic 1.85:1 transfer, if you can play PAL discs.

If MGM's proposed buyout of Universal doesn't happen soon I would expect a DTS widescreen version of The Shadow to show up here soon.

MGM could spell disaster if this merger is OK'd. We all know how well MGM treats many of their catalog titles... and no DTS either!
