SVS wall hanging: a complete review (1 Viewer)

Well, having just won and recieved my SVS wall hanging, I thought I should share some of my thoughts. It does look good, but I thought that companies are supposed to keep their logos small and subtle on their speakers. The logo on this thing took up almost the whole enclosure! Still, it looks pretty good.

Now to the sound: I have to say, that I'm a bit disappointed here as well. After hearing so many things about how SVS can shake your room, this unit is just not delivering the goods. In fact, I can barely hear anything at all with most DVDs. I'm wondering if this has to do with the inexplicable decision on SVS's part to switch from a large cylindrical design to a small, thin rectangle. Another complaint is the binding posts. There are small holes in each of the four corners, but it is not very easy to fit 12 gauge speaker wire into it. On the plus side, it is not the least bit boomy or overpowering. Also, it is easier to fit under a table than my 16-46PC.

In all, I'd have to say that the new wall hanging model doesn't quite live up to the SVS standard, but will still make a great second sub in your collection (provided that the first one is good).

How big is your room, what type of amplifier are you using? My guess is that your performance problems stem from a lack of calibration. If this does not fix the problem you will most likely need to go to a dual logo setup.

You may also try placing it in the normal 'sweet spot', and crawl around with your ass up in the air to find the place in the room where it sounds best.
Be sure to fill out the divorce papers completely.

Oh, man. Every one of those posts was freakin hilarious. Nice review, Chris. If the other suggestions don't help, you may have cancellation issues. Try reversing the phase. If the knots are too hard to get out of the logo, you can simply exchange the left and right nails. Good luck.

Maybe your sub output voltage is insufficient to drive your new SVS. What is the input sesitivity voltage and impedance of the logo? This has been a common problem as of late with SVS owners. That's why they are comming out with a black box line driver. Maybe this is exactly what you need to get that thing to really sing.

You may be running into a impedence problem, not to be confused with impotence, have you tried adding the RCA SA-155 for a logo boost, I hear that the SVS Black Box may get the rectangle a thumping again.

I'll bet the wall hanging is performing just fine, but you have become accustomed to "boomy" wall hangings like Dogs Playing Poker or Velvet Elvis.

I believe the wall hanging is designed to "mate" with your other SVS, rather than to perform on its own -- if you turn your sub up loud enough, you'll probably find that the wall hanging starts making noise.

A Radioshak SPL is the best 40 dollars you'll ever spend.

BTW, I "know this guy" who once got that same SVS and returned it, b/c he preferred his main towers to that svs + bookshelves. Before someone attacks poor innocent old me, I'd like to mention that some people do have bad experiences w/ SVS's as above noted. Just remember if you do buy Def Tech speakers which "some people" have claimed to be the best in the world to give them ample breathing room and read them stories at night cause they get grumpy.

I know what I am about to say is controversial, but...
I have my wall hanging suspended via oxygen free, 5ga, platinum coated, MonstahString. I recently did a double blind test with my wife and father-in-law and they both swore that the wall hanging was a significant improvement over my "dogs playing poker" (which was no slouch by the way, MarcVH). They could immediately notice the difference just by walking into the room.

Important note about the Radio Shack SPL meter:

When calibrating with Avia, VE or internal test tones, DO NOT point the meter in the direction of the logo. Sound from the SVS wall hanging is non-directional to an extent, but pointing the meter directly at the wall hanging's surface will exaggerate readings and throw off calibration.

Something you might try is placing your logo on a block of concrete. This should tighten up bass considerably, especially if your logo is in a room with carpeted floors. Normally, I would suggest carpet spikes, but SVS' website says you do not need them with their products.

Also, if your logo is out of phase, you might not get much out of it. To check the phase of your SVS wall hanging, look at it from your listening position. If you can see the word "SVS" in large letters, your wall hanging is in phase. If, however, you see nothing but a black rectangle, you need to reverse the phase of your wall hanging to get the best response.

To those of you putting down the Dogs Playing Poker wall hangings, clearly you don't know what you're talking about. I have a pair of those in my HT, and I don't believe for a second anything can provide the overall HT experience they do. My bet is that you're buying others only because of WAF, which is just sad and pathetic. Be a man, stand up for your rights, and get the Dogs. As for calibration, what a waste. My ears tell me what's right, and the Dogs do the job every time. Granted if you got the SVS wall hanging for free, I can't fault you for using it, but until you've tried the Dogs, you don't know what you're missing.

Notice that placement is critical. You don't want to corner load these puppies in an apartment like mine.

I won the logo also but haven't received it yet, though I hope that my logo doesn't have similar problems like your logo. Perhaps SVS needs to consider a LOGOi or LOGO+ in the near future. Hmmm, I wonder what the LOGO-Ultra would be like?

Have you tried a cheater plug? Depending what you are driving that with, you might need to only use 2 of the 4 speaker terminals, especially if your driver is a BFH.

Chris D, I was wondering if you could answer a serious question about the wall logo. Was "SVS" spelled correctly on yours? I had heard there were some quality control problems and some people got one with the company name spelled backwards.
