Try the JBL PB12. Im not a fan of JBL but my friend bought one and its pretty good. It cost $400 at the store but Ive seen around for under $300 (us).
Its got a down-firing 12" driver, 250watts, uh...

Look into the Velodyne CT Series, it has been replaced by the CHT series. You may be able to find a good deal on a close out.

Hey, If you can get to a Costco, pick up the D-Box David 301 subwoofer, for the price $275 you cannot go wrong, as it will blow away any brand at FutureShop. 12' speaker cone, 350 WATTS of amp power, phase, crossover, auto on and biwiring. It has is all and sounds good, for the money you want to spend i would buy two. :)

The VEL CTs are on sale as mentioned, good woofs.
I've also seen the older JBL D112s in the $200 range on some internet sites. Thye are good performers..but had amp related problems(so I think these might be refurbs).
The Old PS1200 from paradigm was a good unit.

TV is right about those amps.
When my friend got his at (ahem) Best Buy, his produced no signal whatsoever at first. Then he took it back and they replaced it with a new one. He has had no promlems after that. Hes allways bragging.

Don 't forget the Sony SA WM40. Cheap home theater raved about it along with some members here. I purchased 1 as a surround sub and find it to be a great unit.

My first sub was a Klipsch KSW-12 and it can now be had for about that price. A pretty good choice, IMO.

Get in touch with Trevor Schell. He's selling a couple of SVS 20-39CS and may be able to work with you. You will need something to power it with but it will probably offer you the best bang for the buck. You can also look at Paradigm and Energy subs as you are able to get a much better deal on them than we can.

In Canada, the Sony SAWM-40 lists for CDN$300....street is CDN$240-$250. For CDN$500, you may be able to get dual Sony subs.

Also, the Mission 700ASi sub lists for CDN$540. Street is somewhere in the $400 range. Tom Nousaine of Sound and Vision recommended the 700AS (previous model, less power) sub along with the Hsu VTF-2. LFE: 102dB at 25 Hz (10% max. distortion) and an average SPL of over 108dB between 25 and 62 Hz. I have a pair of the 700AS (has a 100 W amp instead of 150 W for the 700ASi) for a year now. In my room, they roll off at 32 Hz....I expected them to go down to the mid 20 Hz range....maybe there is a null in my room. If you can, try to get one with a good return policy. Anyway, it is still a good performing sub in it's price range.
