Strange double subtitles on DVD Movie (1 Viewer)

I purchased "Driving Miss Daisy" recently and when playing, it shows constant subtitles by apparent default-I cannot get rid of them.
If I go to "subtitles" on the controller and switch it on, I get TWO sets of subtitles and oddly, they are not the same type face, I switch it off and the "default" one remains. The "default set appears like an overlay.I Sent the original DVD back to the vendor and the replacement does exactly the same thing. None of my other DVD's act this way on my Toshiba player.

Any help, explanation or theory will be appreciiated. Thanks, James H.

Sounds like the disk also supports closed captioning and you have that turned on somewhere along the chain (player or TV). Could that be it?

Thanks John, Your suggestion solved the problem. The DVD player had CC activated. I didn't know you could have closed caption and subtitles run concurrently.TNX again,
