Collector’s Edition of H.R. Pufnstuf Complete Series Coming in January 2011

LOS ANGELES (November 1, 2010) – Sid and Marty Krofft changed Saturday mornings forever when the sibling puppeteers unleashed colorful characters like H.R. Pufnstuf and The Bugaloos on a generation of sugary-cereal-fueled kids growing up in the 1970s and ’80s.

After partnering with the Krofft’s earlier this year, Vivendi Entertainment is launching a series of DVD sets and compilations this fall that will spotlight the duo’s iconic catalog of children’s shows. The first DVD release, SID & MARTY KROFFT’S SATURDAY MORNING HITS, will be available at retailers November 30 for a list price of $14.93. The extra includes A PHOTO GALLERY THAT SPANS 50 YEARS OF THE KROFFT’S ARTWORK. Two more DVD releases will follow in January 2011 with H.R. PUFNSTUF: THE COMPLETE SERIES and H.R. PUFNSTUF: THE COMPLETE SERIES COLLECTOR’S EDITION. These two new three-DVD sets will include the entire series, and, for the first time ever on DVD, the rare pilot episode, “Horror Hotel.” The Collector’s Edition will contain a collectible H.R. Pufnstuf bobblehead.

SID & MARTY KROFFT’S SATURDAY MORNING HITS contains more than two and a half hours of beloved Krofft creations with classic episodes from H.R. Pufnstuf, The Bugaloos, Sigmund & the Sea Monsters and Lidsville. It also includes never-before-on-DVD episodes of Electra Woman & Dyna Girl, Bigfoot & Wildboy, and Wonderbug. A gallery that spans 50 years of the Krofft’s artwork is included as a DVD extra.

As the upcoming releases celebrate the Kroffts’ past, the brothers are looking to the future with a new partnership with Ruby-Spears Productions, the legendary animators responsible for Scooby Doo. They are working together to bring to life over 1,100 characters that “king of the comics” artist Jack Kirby created for the first time ever for television and film.

The Krofft brothers have been producing entertainment treasured by families for more than 40 years. Sid & Marty rose to prominence in the ’70s with a series of remarkable programs that featured elaborate sets and fanciful characters. H.R. Pufnstuf was the first in a long line of popular programs created by the Kroffts, includingThe Bugaloos, Land Of The Lost, Sigmund & the Sea Monsters and The Krofft Supershow to name but a few. The Krofft’s success led them to produce various prime-time series and specials, including The Brady Bunch Hour,The Donny & Marie Show and Barbara Mandrell & The Mandrell Sisters series.

Sid and Marty Krofft will appear together at a special AMERICAN CINEMATHEQUE screening of the originalH.R. Pufnstuf movie on Saturday, November 20 at the Aero Theater in Santa Monica. Olivia Munn will host a special Q & A directly following the screening. Please see www.americancinematheque.com for further details.

If I'm not mistaken, there had to be more -- isn't that from the Krofft Superstar Variety Hour (successor of The Krofft Supershow)? I recall tuning into it at least once and that format didn't last long (not even a whole season, I don't think) but certainly there had to have been more than just one. (I seem to recall it featuring characters from different Krofft shows interacting with one another -- I wonder if additional ones will appear on other series sets.) I also wonder if their inclusion of the first one on this set indicates that there is no intention of eventually releasing the show itself (our old friend "music rights issues" can be a pain) -- well, we'll see. I got the Rhino Pufnstuf set when it came out so I'd have to really think it over before double-dipping (even though it did rank as one of my favorite Saturday morning shows in its day). I am glad to see that this stuff will be available again, but I would much rather see all the shows released in full, rather than yet another sampler disc which happens to include different specific segments of certain elements of The Krofft Supershow than the previous ones (and then to have them use that as a selling point). Again though, in any event, glad to see this material available again.

Man, why cant they do the whole series of one or the other? I hate it when they jump around like that.
