i've had my 50" Mits for about 5 years now and it has never seen an ISF tech or been cleaned. i've been into HT for about 2 years and just can't afford to have it calibrated just yet, BUT i would like to clean the inside myself. could someone please link me or give any tips on cleaning (duh) and how to get inside the set? many thanks in advance :).

Generically speaking,
Typically, you will have to take the screen off.
Remove the bottom speaker panels ...
Will see screws holding the bezel onto the TV ...
unscrew and lift off ...
Clean inside with??? Lintfree towels ... vacuum cleaner ...
lens tissue ...

Michael,
I've had my Tosh TW40X81 about 14 months. Does it likely need cleaning?
And am I in danger of knocking something out of alignment if I perform the procedure?
Thanks,
David

It's always so hard to tell about who needs cleaning and when?
I recently opened my TV up after over 1 year to clean it and found little to nothing built up in terms of dust. So I left it alone.
Others ... who smoke ... live in dusty places ... then yes.
cleaning the inside will not usually affect the set except improve light output if already dusty.
Beware of using windex on the mirror though ... one tends to leave more residue on the mirror that not doing it. A soft lint free cloth should be good enough. I have even used the vacuum hose.
When open ... you may find that the mechanical focus is actually loose. It happens sometimes.
Clean away ... not much to worry about.
Regards

thanks to all that replied! i cleaned the mirror and the lenses. not much dust on either and it's a 5 year old unit!(?) Mike, the mild soap/water worked great on the mirror, thanks again. i used a flashlight and looked down the lenses and noticed that at the bottom there are a couple of bugs in EACH!!!!!!
