Terrible, terrible day, two legends gone. :frowning::frowning:

I think i'll go out and buy a leg lamp in his honor and place it proudly in the window.

Rest in peace, Darren McGavin. :frowning::frowning::frowning:

I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I remember him best as Schwarzenegger's mentor in Raw Deal. This flick is one of my favorite guilty pleasures, and McGavin is teriffic in an over-the-top, scenery-chewing way.

He will be missed.

I kind of wish they had been able to do a Kolchack tv movie with him in it before he died. That would've been good.

Darren was a great actor, he will be missed, he inspired many characters along his course in Hollywood. We wouldn't have Fox Mulder if it weren't for Carl Kolchack and the list goes on I'm sure.

RIP

"The Natural" is one of my all-time favorites...

Gus Sands: If it isn't enough, tell us what you had in mind.
Roy Hobbs: To hit away.

after being overlooked/overshadowed all weekend, Countdown on MSNBC singled him out tonight at the end of the show with some input from a TV Guide columnist.
The focus of the back and forth was mostly in regards to his work in A Christmas Story and wasn't very insightful, and i'm not sure i agreed with the Ken Olberman's premise (That DM grounded the movie with his realistic portrayl of the father...from my vantage, Ralphie was the realistic character with the father being, affectionately, more of a caricature)-but it was great to see the show go against the grain and single out McGavin for recognition and eulogizing.
i was a huge fan of Kolchak as a kid, and didn't run across ACS until the late 80's. As the years went by, and it was clear that the movie was becoming a new holiday touchstone for a lot of people, i felt happy for him. Even for people that wouldn't touch a show like Night Stalker with a 10 foot pole, he'll be a presence they'll know and remember with affection for the rest of their lives.

not bad, old man.

I really enjoyed his guest-performance as Frank Black's father in Millennium. Having him appear as a "grumpy old man" in a Millennium Christmas episode was a not-so-subtle nod to McGavin's A Christmas Story. Since both The X-Files and Millennium were both inspired by Kolchak, it was fun to see him appear in these shows.

He was also excellent as "Oliver Spencer", head of the O.S.O., in the pilot for The Six Million Dollar Man. (The character would be reworked for the series as "Oscar Goldman, head of the O.S.I., as played by Richard Anderson -- who appeared with McGavin in The Night Strangler.)

A truly class act that will be greatly missed.

RIP! Loved him in a Christmas Story. We watch it every year and he always reminds me of my own father.

He will be missed...

Coincidently, Darren worked with Don Knotts in two Disney films (Hot Lead and Cold Feet & No Deposit No Return) and Dennis Weaver (Mastergate).
