A very few newer players are capable of upconverting to 720p via component, but Robert's RP-91 will only output 480i or 480p. The tv is displaying the incoming scanrate--1080i for HD and either 480i or 480p for dvd.

I don't know where Robert got the idea that progressive scan dvd is supposed to be 720p.

720p is a progressive scanrate by the way, just not the one for progressive scan dvd unless you have one of the handful of upconverting dvd players.

... like the LG 7832 or the Zenith 318 equivalent that will upconvert from 480 to 720p or 1080i using either the dvi or the component outputs.

One of which (the Zenith) is on it's way to my house at this very moment for use with my component-video only Sony KP57HW40!

If I can add to this tread:
I am shopping for a new TV CRT Direct TV and DVD player.
The difference between the regular 32" and a 32" capable of displaying 480p is $800 or so in Canada. And the difference between an HDTV ready model (1080i/720p) is maybe 3x's the price.

I guess my question is: will I see that much of a difference between 480i and 480p? If not, I'll just get the regular 480i TV.

I have a 36" Wega and the 480i, 16:9 enhanced, component connection video already looks pretty damn good to me when watching DVD's.

Thanks
Andy
