Yesterday the local Planet Hollywood restaurant that I worked at closed without giving the workers any advance notice whatsoever. I found out from a recording when I happened to call them for something.

While it might seem a scummy way, it's the best way. Too many people are too vindictive, and I wouldn't want to be eating there with disgruntled servers doing all manner of whatever to my food, unbeknownst to me.

Besides, their food sucks, anyway. Robert Earl (founder) lives here, and his local drama about "needing" a ridiculous salary while they were in bankruptcy (which time?) was laughable, at best. As is typical, he somehow weaseled it. If I was Arnie and/or Bruce (both big $$ backers), I'd have a "talk" with him.

Hopefully, the workers got some sort of small package besides a boot in the ass.

Yes, it was the one in the Mall of America....other Todd, what kind of things did they say about Robert Earl? That man is the most hated man at Planet Hollywood. All they care about is some stupid casino that are trying to renovate in Vegas...the only package they gave us was one that had phone #s for corporate, info on 401k & insurance plans, tips on dealing with job loss, and resume hints. That is it.....

Nothing really good about R. Earl. The paper (Orlando Sentinel) went on about how Planet Hollywood was essentially run into the ground, but he enjoyed magnificent parties at his Isleworth home (Shaq and Tiger Woods among his neighbors) here in town. Additionally, his wife (Patricia?? ) is working the socialite scene, and single-handedly supporting the Southern Ballet Theatre company here. A noble gesture, except when you are doing it with money skimmed from a bankrupt company.
To me, he's a poster child for what's wrong with corporate executive America.

Good luck on your job hunt. How about Rainforest Cafe? I've always liked their food better. The only good thing I remember from Planet Hollywood is the Chicken Crunch, the chicken fingers with the Cap'n Crunch batter. Those were good.

I don't know why restaurant workers would expect severance packages. Geez. Aren't there other restaurants in town where they could work?

Bleh, that's atrocious!! They should have told you months in advance the store was in trouble. This would have at least left you with a couple of leads by the time the restaurant shut down, not to mention some breathing room between your bills & bank account.

If you have a reliable car look into delivering pizzas. I've been doing it for about 2 months and being debt free is almost on the horizon for me!

I wasn't talking six months pay or anything. How about a week or two? I'd also cut them more slack if I wasn't so aware of the extravagant life the CEO leads right here in my town.

I've eaten at Planet Hollywood at the Mall of America once - liked the atmosphere, food was grossly overpriced. How about the Twin Cities Grill? My favorite restraurant at MoA - excellent food, great service, and I just love that little loaf of bread they give you before your meal.

Sorry to hear about the job loss. I've eaten there 3 times. The prices there were very high. That's also the reason I won't eat at the Hard Rock in downtown anymore.

Last time I was down there, there was a sign now hiring for the new Bubba Gump Shrimp restaurant.

In January of this year my wife called a week before her birthday and made reservations at the Odyssey Cafe at the MOA. When we went to down there for dinner the place had closed 2 days before with no notice to its employees.

It's been known for YEARS that PH was in trouble. One big clue was when they closed most of their stores years ago.

I'd be surprised if any restaurant did that. Hint: it closed because it was in trouble.

Well, it apparently doesn't keep Mr. Earl from drawing several hundred thousand dollars a year in salary, along with additional bonuses.

It happens all the time. They layoff 40% of their workforce and the whole board takes a raise

It's pretty common for restaurant closures to happen IMMEDIATELY without ever informing the staff. The nature of the business coupled with federal and local food safety laws means that when a restaurant needs to close, it usually closes the same day the decision was made, leaving many staffers to show up the next day only to see a "shut down" sign on the door.
