[While on the great subject of Pink Floyd, I just purchased a surround system that plays SACD format and the 30th anniversary Dark Side album. One word...WOW. Also, Pulse is rumored to be coming out on DVD. Anyone know of a release date? ]

Aaron, I wouldnt hold my breath on "Pulse". I've heard rumors for a long time now... both ways. Latest I heard, was that the idea was canned for now.

The Pompei dvd is due out soon though!!

At just about 1 month from my 29th birthday, I just now became a Pink Floyd fan. All through my music-listening life I've never gotten into them for some reason, probably because I never gave them a chance. I would hear stuff from them occasionally, but except for "Comfortably Numb", I never thought "wow, that rocks!".

Then along comes SACD and I start reading on this forum about what to buy and DSOTM keeps coming up, so I think, what the heck, I'll give it a whirl...

OMG, so THAT'S what all the fuss is about!? I deeply regret not listening to Floyd now. I've been just blown away by the ethereal quality of most of the songs. In truth, "Money" has started to grow on me, but I considered it the lesser of all on the album (besides the aforementioned effects loop track). I'm planning on holding off on buying any of their other albums, in hopes that SACD and/or DVD-A versions will someday be released, althougth that is getting hard after reading this thread!

Maybe I should go out and buy "Animals" and a couple of others on CD...

Animals was Waters' take on the famous book "Animal Farm,'' Huxley's satirical novel on totalitarianism. It didn't start out that way. Dogs and Sheep were being performed live by the band nearly three years before Animals was released. They merely polished up those songs (You've Got to be Crazy and Raving and Drooling), and Waters added Pigs Three Different Ones and Pigs on the Wing. Waters merely bridged the songs together using Animal Farm as inspiration. The harshness of the sound, combined with some brutal lyrics, didn't make it a favorite of radio. Songs 15 minutes in length didn't help either. Still, it's one of my favorite albums of all time.

Actually, "Animal Farm" was by Orwell. The album wasn't a straight adaptation as Orwell's book was (I believe) about communism while "Animals was an indictment of England's capitalist society, which was under Thatcher's leadership at the time (Waters, as we all know, wasn't exactly thrilled with Maggie's reign. See "The Final Cut").

Margaret Thatcher & the Conservatives didn't come into power until the 1979 election. Didn't Animals come out two years before that?

Daniel:

My Bad. Thanks for correction.

As to the timing of Animals and Thatcher: Indeed, Animals was released years before Margaret Thatcher became PM of England. But Waters, a raving socialist (although to this day he has problems being a rich socialist, loved to rant against capitalism. The economics of capitalism is really what is targeted in Animals. Waters fine-tuned his criticism a few years later with The Final Cut, taking aim at Thatcher et al.

This is what I get for making use of "Guitar World" as a source. Anyway, Waters clearly had Thatcher in mind when singing some of these songs on the "Radio KAOS" tour.

Loved Floyd, I think growing up it was my favorite band. I think, for me, the most underrated Floyd album is the Soundtrack to the film "More" I love that album! I also love Animals too but I almost never here anybody talking about More than the others that are mentioned here...

More is easily my least favorite pre-Lapse PF album. A few good songs, surrounded by boring or obnoxious songs.

However, I like Obscured by Clouds a great deal.

Wow has everyone forgotten about LIVE AT POMPEII.....That version of echoes is the most memorable thing I think pink floyd has ever done. The visuals are totally cool, and its right before dark side was made. Too bad the rest of the "concert" wasnt as great. Anyone know if they are ever gonna release a special edition of POMPEII on DVD?...that would be awesome.;)

I really enjoy Pink Floyd and Roger Waters...

Recently, I dusted off "The Final Cut" cd and have been listening to it in my car...This cd rocks!! Its probably 2nd only to "The Wall".

Anyone know the concept behind The Final Cut? It seems to flow along the same lines as the wall...

BTW, Roger Waters' Radio K.A.O.S. is also an incredible cd...

I just have to resurrect this thread to say that I bought "Animals" and "Wish You Were Here" the other day, and I have come to the conclusion that "Dogs" is one of the top 3 songs I've ever heard in my life. It's just incredible, does anyone think there's another Floyd song better than this? If so, let me know, I'll grab the album post haste!

One infamous Gilmour quote is "Roger, if these songs weren't good enough to make it on The Wall then why are they good enough to release now?" The Final Cut began as an accompanying soundtrack to The Wall that would feature material written for (or inspired by) the album. When Waters finally began recording, keyboardist Rick Wright had left the band. A few drum beats on the album come from a session drummer because Waters wasn't happy with Nick Mason's contributions. To be fair, Waters seemed to be affected by the conflict in the Falklands and he would obviously be in a dark psychological place after completing the work on the Wall movie (which is really about his father's death in WWII and his trouble dealing with it).

Some people say that The Final Cut is Roger Waters' first solo album, others say that it was Pink Floyd's last relevant album.

I agree with the theme of this post, though. Pink Floyd is the best! When I was a child, my parents would play DSOTM or The Wall while they prepared dinner or played board games with us kids. I literally grew up with Pink Floyd in my ears, but I never grow tired of their work. More, UmmaGumma, and Meddle just blew my mind when I first listened to them and I spent hours trying to understand the mysteries of their soundscapes.

Pink Floyd's "Meddle"!! 'Echoes' is unbelievable, and one of their best songs, IMHO. You MUST crank this song to really enjoy it, especially the MFSL Gold CD version :D

Personally, I'd prefer Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I to IX), but you already have that on WYWH :D

The other would be Comfortably Numb, I assume you have the Wall, but IMHO the Pulse version is better.

All my opinion only, others will surely disagree. But yes, Floyd rules...
