Yes, we need more Genesis on dvd!
One of my Top 3 all-time favorite bands especially the Gabriel era and the Hackett era.
Good to see fellow Genesis fans frequent this site.

I love Genesis, in fact I have went down to my favorite record shop and got Trespass,Nursery Cryme,Foxtrot,Selling England by the Pound, to go with my Lamb on vinyl. I have the cds, but I am mostly a record collector, Phil is great, but Genesis was Genesis with Peter Gabriel. It's sad that so many have never heard this stuff. I am only 19 and only bought my first Genesis cd a couple of years ago, I am a big early Queen fan too, albums like Queen 1 and 2, so it's no suprise I am jazzed about this DVD. Hope someone will get a Gabriel Genesis performance soon, Firth of Firth would be wonderful live.

It's extremely cool to see that fellow HTFers like my favorite band. I would love to see some early Gabriel concerts on DVD.

What I'd like the most though, are some Music Videos!!!

Now THAT would be awesome!!!

I finally had a chance to watch my Genesis Songbook DVD last night. It's a nice overview of the band's career, although it's WAY too short. There's no revelations for long-time fans here, but the disc is worth picking up for a handful of newly recorded acoustic studio performances, including "Afterglow" (Tony & Phil), "Follow You, Follow Me" (Tony, Phil, & Mike), and "Horizons" (Steve).
What I most enjoyed was the in-depth discussion of songs such as "Afterglow", "Musical Box", and "Supper's Ready". Tony's segments were recorded with him at the piano where he could demonstrate various bits. I found this fascinating - I would love it if the guys had time to go through the entire catalog and do this for every song.
Also I ordered the Genesis - The Way We Walk NTSC DVD from http://www.genesis-music.com/ . Price comes out to about $33.50 U.S. shipped. It's kind of a funky ordering system, but I got a confirmation e-mail, so I guess it worked. ;)

I'm hoping they include the little news segment from opening night in Dallas that was shown on the original VHS tape
Hey, Steve, I pulled out my LD of "The Way They Walk" last night and I didn't see this segment on it. The laser has what I believe was the entire set (I saw the show in the Astrodome the day after the Dallas opener) plus four music videos from the "We Can't Dance" album, but no news or interview segments that I could find. Was the VHS for this concert different from the laser??

The opening-night news segment was only on the VHS tape.

More likely would be the 1978 UK TV program entitled "Genesis In Concert" which was aired on the US television program "Night Flight" during the 1980's. Filmed in 1976, this includes a superb performance with Bill Bruford on drums, and is probably what people refer to when they talk about a "Seconds Out" concert film. I saw this program by pure chance when it aired in the UK in 1978, and also again on "Night Flight", and although it is one the short side (60 minutes or less), it would still be well worth the $ since it is musically superior to anything released over the past 5-6 years...
Yes, I agree. I also saw this show with Bill Bruford in the 80's and it was a great performance. I believe the "Seconds Out" live album is from that tour. I remember the songs "Squonk", "The Carpet Crawl", "Supper's Ready" and my favorite "I Know What I Like". This would be fantastic to have on DVD.

The Bill Bruford 1976 concert film was about 45 minutes long and was released on a a LD in Japan years ago. I almost sprung for it but it was just too expensive for the amount of content, plus I wasn't able to find any info on it (sound quality, etc.). My tape of the Night Flight version will have to suffice for now. One neat thing about the film is that the video which played in back of the band during "Entangled" during that tour is shown up front during much of the song in the film and is quite wonderful. The Night Flight version is shown in a 1.78 widescreen, btw.

The Genesis - The Way We Walk NTSC DVD showed up on Saturday, and I am very, very impressed with it.
The 5.1 mix is considerably better than the stereo version. It really puts you in the middle of the stadium.
The multiple angle feature is the icing on the cake. Although the edited-down version is still good--giving a feel for the lighting and the use of the Jumbotron screens, the angles often offer a fixed perspective view of the stage, and show how the screens were used to mix live music videos during the concert. The perspective views are not always available, and they drift on occasion to catch other bits of the concert action, but the fact that they are available at the touch of a button makes this my favorite concert DVD. I wish more were like it. Flash-cut editing sinks most concert videos for me.
There are also Phil, Tony, and Mike angles used in several of the songs, giving extended views of their performances.
Supplements include interviews with the band, a commentary track, and captures/text from the tour program.
The layer switches on both dual-layered discs are in the middle of songs. They are not seamless, and a bit jarring at first.
All in all, this was well worth the extra cost of ordering an import from the U.K. And even better is that it is available in both PAL and NTSC with no region restrictions.
Two thumbs up!

There's already been some discussion of this title in this thread. The set is only available online direct from the official Genesis web site. Make sure you order the correct version (NTSC or PAL).
I received my copy yesterday. Good picture and sound (the 5.1 track). It looks to be the exact same program as the laser release. However, I am VERY disappointed with the commentary at this point - it is a terrible recording/mix and I can't understand a single word anyone is saying - that is, when they are talking at all (very sparse track).
Nevertheless, an essential release for Genesis fans.

Craig S,

You are so correct about the commentary track. I was just trying out the various features on the discs, and I got the same impression as you do regarding the commentary. I was thinking I lost all my command of English all of a sudden.

The concert was great though.

Sorry, I'm just not interested in the 1992 shows, or much of anything since Gabriel and Hackett left - I find their solo albums have much more interesting music than anything done by the other three.
Hackett has his own website at: www.stevehackett.com where you can get his CDs and DVDs.

hey Parker, a treat for you.

Most was from memory, but I did have to get a little bit of help for all the lyrics:

i. LOVERS' LEAP

Walking across the sitting-room, I turn the television off.

Sitting beside you, I look into your eyes.

As the sound of motor cars fades in the night time,

I swear I saw your face change, it didn't seem quite right.

......And it's hello babe with your guardian eyes so blue.

Hey, my baby don't you know our love is true.

Coming closer with our eyes, a distance fall around our bodies.

Out in the garden, the moon seems very bright.

Six saintly shrouded men move across the lawn slowly,

The seventh walks in front with a cross held high in hand.

......And it's hey babe your supper's waiting for you.

Hey my baby, don't you know our love is true.

I've been so far from here,

Far from your warm arms.

It's good to feel you again,

It's been a long long time. Hasn't it?

ii. THE GUARENTEED ETERNAL SANCTUARY MAN

I know a farmer who looks after the farm.

With water clear, he cares for all his harvest.

I know a fireman who looks after the fire.

You, can't you see he's fooled you all.

Yes, he's here again, can't you see he's fooled you all.

Share his peace,

Sign the lease.

He's a supersonic scientist,

He's the guarenteed eternal sanctuary man.

Look, look into my mouth he cries,

And all the children lost down many paths,

I bet my life you'll walk inside

Hand in hand

Gland in gland

With a spoonful of miracle,

He's the guarenteed eternal sanctuary man.

We will rock you, rock you little snake,

We will keep you snug and warm.

iii. IKHNATON AND ITSACON AND THEIR BAND OF MERRY MEN

Wearing feeling on our faces while our faces took a rest,

We walked across the fields to see the children of the West,

But we saw a host of dark skinned warriors

standing still below the ground,

Waiting for battle.

The fight's begun, they've been released.

Killing foe for peace. . . bang, bang, bang. Bang, bang, bang...

And they're giving me a wonderful potion,

'Cos I cannot contain my emotion.

And even though I'm feeling good,

Something tells me I'd better activate my prayer capsule.

Today's a day to celebrate, the foe have met their fate.

The order for rejoicing and dancing has come from our warlord.

iv. HOW DARE I BE SO BEAUTIFUL?

Wandering through the chaos the battle has left,

We climb up a mountain of human flesh,

To a plateau of green grass, and green trees full of life.

A young figure sits still by the pool,

He's been stamped human bacon by some butchery tool.

(He is you.)

Social Security took care of this lad.

We watch in reverence, as Narcissus is turned to a flower.

A flower?

v. WILLOW FARM

If you go down to Willow Farm,

to look for butterflies, flutterbyes, gutterflies

Open your eyes, it's full of surprise, everyone lies

like the focks on the rocks,

and the musical box.

Oh, there's Mum & Dad, and good and bad,

and everyone's happy to be here.

There's Winston Churchill dressed in drag,

he used to be a British flag, plastic bag, what a drag.

The frog was a prince, the prince was a brick, the brick was an

egg, and the egg was a bird.

Hadn't you heard?

Yes, we're happy as fish and gorgeous as geese,

and wonderfully clean in the morning.

We've got everything, we're growing everything,

We've got some in

We've got some out

We've got some wild things floating about.

Everyone, we're changing everyone,

you name them all,

We've had them here,

And the real stars are still to appear.

ALL CHANGE!

Feel your body melt;

Mum to mud to mad to dad

Dad diddley office, Dad diddley office,

You're all full of ball.

Dad to dam to dum to mum

Mum diddley washing, Mum diddley washing,

You're all full of ball.

Let me hear you lies, we're living this up to the eyes.

Ooee-ooee-ooee-oowaa

Momma I want you now.

And as you listen to my voice

To look for hidden doors, tidy floors, more applause.

You've been here all the time,

Like it or not, like what you got,

You're under the soil,

Yes, deep in the soil.

So we'll end with a whistle and end with a bang

and all of us fit in our places.

vi. APOCALYPSE IN 9/8 (CO-STARRING THE DELICIOUS TALENTS OF

GABBLE RATCHET)

With the guards of Magog swarming around,

The Pied Piper takes his children underground.

The Dragon's coming out of the see,

with the shimmering silver head of wisdom looking at me.

He brings down the fire from the skies,

You can tell he's doing well by the look in human eyes.

You'd better not compromise.

It won't be easy.

666 is no longer alone,

He's getting out the marrow in your back bone,

And the seven trumpets blowing sweet rock and roll,

Gonna blow right down inside your soul.

Pythagoras with the looking glass reflects the full moon,

In blood, he's writing the lyrics of a brand new tune.

And it's hey babe, with your guardian eyes so blue,

Hey my baby, don't you know our love is true,

I've been so far from here,

Far from your loving arms,

Now I'm back again, and abay it's going to work out fine.

vii. AS SURE AS EGGS IS EGGS (ACHING MEN'S FEET)

Can't you feel our souls ignite

Shedding ever changing colours in the darkness of the fading

night,

Like the river joins the ocean, as the germ in the seed grows

We have finally been freed to get back home.

There's anm angel standing in the sun, and he's crying with a

loud voice,

"This is the supper of the mighty one,"

Lord of Lords,

King of Kings

Has returned to take his children home,

To take them to the new Jerusalem.
