I'm surprised this hasn't attracted more attention. It was dropped at the end of a Labor Day New York Times story on Band of Brothers.
But the show will occupy the most valuable territory on HBO, 9 p.m. Sunday nights. It is the place where HBO has struck fear in the hearts of network programmers, and this is the first time HBO has ever dared to challenge broadcast network programming at the start of a new television season.
"'We used to cower in the face of the network season," Mr. Albrecht said [that's Chris Albrecht, head of HBO original programming]. "We don't anymore."
Indeed, next September Mr. Albrecht will use his biggest gun against whatever the networks offer in that new season. Mr. Albrecht made it official: the fourth season of "The Sopranos" will not start in either May or June, but will be held back until September 2002.

It is not normal "TV" so to speak; if I wanted run of the mill, I could expect it TV, I've got plenty of choices. If it's taking him time to map out what he wants to do for the next two seasons, and HBO is willing to give him money to do it, I can wait for it

Okay, they went from "It's not TV, it's HBO" to emulating network programming.
I like HBO because they run against the grain of network t.v., in both content and scheduling. I know they've really put a lot of force into advertising on both cable and network (i.e. Band of Brothers, Sopranos), but shaping their schedules using the network mold is... well, not HBO.
They better have a kick ass shows to follow-up Sopranos, SatC, 6FU, and OZ if they want to go head-on with the big three.
Or is six now?

That pretty much sums up what I understand the Sunday lineup will be in 2002: OZ in January, Six Feet Under in April, Sex and the City in June (with a 6-week season 4 closer in January), The Sopranos in September.
For 2003, who knows? (But according to the article linked above, Albrecht is hoping for a fifth Sopranos season.)

What is the reason for the start of season 4 being pushed back five months? Is it because HBO wants The Sopranos to go head-to-head with other network shows? Or is it because David Chase needs more time to write?

If it is for the latter, that's fine with me. No use sacrificing quality. If it's for the former, why? This show is going to get great ratings no matter what.

Ah, good. This means I don't need HBO for almost a full year. That's about $90 in programming I get to save.
