Just watched this movie again after a while. It's one of my childhood movies. It did held up well. What surprised me the most was the lighting. I don't know if you can call it bad lighting or not but all the interior sets looked flat with no shadows like it was a game show. You would think with their high profile picture they do better.

The answer is simple. The cinematographer was one of the great masters of light, but he was working for Frank Sinatra who wanted everything done quickly. (Sinatra had had Charles Lang fired from Young At Heart because he took too long to prepare the shots) Sinatra first worked with William Daniels on A Hole In The Head and was so pleased that thereafter he insisted on Daniels whenever possible. They made nine films together.

The quickest way to light a set is to flood it with light, but the result is everything looks a bit bland.
