The only time two lives were honored on the show, as both Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy were the rather subdued subjects.

Writes Barry I. Grauman 1 year ago “Despite Ralph Edwards' claim in later years that a stuck door was responsible for the delay in bringing Stan and Ollie to the NBC Studios, the REAL reason their appearance was delayed was because Stan had no intention of being "surprised" on national television, and refused to attend the telecast {"We intended to do something on television", he later recalled, "but we certainly never intended by starting out on an unrehearsed network program."}. It was Hardy who convinced his partner to "be a good sport" and go through with it, reminding him that everyone had been assembled to honor them, and that they couldn't let their fans down. Laurel agreed.”

The Burns & Allen Show
"Gracie Buys a Toaster" (S4E38)

1639317595643.png

George Burns, speaking directly to the camera, points out how far women have come in 1954: "I know women doctors, women lawyers, women engineers. I even know a woman who washes dishes." Nothing but belly laughs at this progressive revelation. George raises this issue only because of Gracie's annoying insistence of picking out his suits for him. Imagine--a woman with a flair for fashion. Why, pretty soon we'll have women pilots!?

George feels a need to assert his manliness with Gracie. She wants to to go upstate of San Francisco to purchase a new toaster that's advertised at a discount. I don't know what a train ticket to San Fran from LA cost in 1954, but I'm betting it's more than a toaster. George convinces Gracie he knows a local appliance retailer who will give her a discount on one of his toasters in inventory. George Burns needs a discount on a toaster like a centerfold model needs skin tags on her tush. He seems to be stealing a page from his friend Jack Benny's penny-pinching routine.

Nonetheless, Gracie visits George's appliance contact to look over his toaster selection. "Do you have one made in Paris?" she asks. "George just loves French toast." She eventually buys a $32 toaster that has an $8 discount. So impressed with the dealer's discounts, she also buys a refrigerator, stove and washing machine--saving $350 in discounts. Gracie continues to buy big ticket appliances with the belief that what she saves in discounts will eventually pay for all her purchases. With that kind of thinking, Gracie was probably the kind of girl one could convince to get naked at the drive-in because it saved wear and tear on your car upholstery.

Even after a century of airing, I still get a chuckle at George's desert-dry humor and Gracie's smoothly clever misreckoning of any simple intention. Good stuff.

Definitely one of the weirder plot synopses that I've read in a while... It probably makes more sense in the context of the episode.

Thanks Neal (and Marv) for all the fun stuff you guys keep posting in this thread!

Were any doves hurt in the making of this episode?
Besides the ones that Lassie ate?

Never on TV! But shown in schools, libraries, institutions & available free by certain film rental libraries..."Wilbur Gets The Message", was an episode made in cooperation with the U.S. Treasury Department with a Savings Plan/Savings Bond type message. Rare and funny, it's a true curiosity of its time. Look for George O'Hanlon in the cast, most well known as the voice of George Jetson.
