Mark,
Good question. It has a very distinct look and feel to it that I'm sure is a trademark of its director, Denis Villenvenue. I say this because I haven't seen his other film, "August on 32nd Street". But he has a very European feel in his cinematography on "Maelstrom" which keeps making me think that it is a foreign film, even though it was all done right here in Canada.
The film has been submitted for Best Foreign Film consideration for the 2001 Oscars as well, and the distributor is Arrow Features, if I'm not mistaken.
I hope you do give it a look and import this excellent disc from Alliance Atlantis. It's not just Atom Egoyan and David Cronenberg who are the only good things about Canada and film these days. Like "Maelstrom," I'm seeing great stuff like "New Waterford Girl" and even "Waydowntown" that gives our country a breath of fresh air. It's about time!

Jason,
you are right, Marie-Josée Croze is indeed truly beautiful.
Enjoyed the movie, although I was bothered by the artsy soundtrack in the first 60% of the movie. The music attracted too much attention to itself instead of blending smoothly in the movie. It really bothered me. But the soundtrack in the last 40% of the movie was quite good.
I didn't know what to think of the talking fish at first but after I the movie ended, I was saying to myself, a talking fish, why not?
But is she ever pretty. She is not the type to please to everyone, some guys at work were "blah, that's the girl who's supposed to be so pretty?".
Denis Villeneuve has a way in his movies to really make a woman look beautiful, much like he did with Pascale Bussières in "Un 32 Août sur Terre". Charles Binamé's "Eldorado" was also a movie in which Pascale Bussières was especially beautiful.
Another movie I liked was "un coeur au poing" from Charles Binamé. A bit unusual, but good nonetheless.
Un coeur au poing

Maybe I'll pick it up. I'm planning on going to Toronto a few days for vacation before swinging over to the east coast. That would probably be the best time to get it assuming it's readily available.
Let us know if you do, would love to hear your comments on the film and the disc itself.
Regards,
Jason

I don't think Matthew is old enough to see this movie. Jason, unless you're willing to fly down to Vegas to be his guardian whilst viewing it, I think it's out of the question. Either that or send his parent or guardian a letter telling exactly where the naughty bits lie so that he or she can cover his impressionable young eyes.

Tim, you won't believe this, but it has a 14a warning on the back of the box. Matt's safe, but the 14a rating just baffles me.
It was rated 18a here in BC and they were carding a few people when I saw it at UVIC. Now, they almost never do this, just for the more extreme stuff like Lars Von Trier's "Idiots", the porn-star Stacey Valentine documentary or the Shining revival screenings.
I didn't send Matt the copy so I'm cleared. He got it himself, and I hope he hides it along with his other french sex films, his porn stash and Bring It On.

Good. I'd hate for you to have that on your conscience.

With Bring It On getting the most "wear 'n' tear" no doubt.

Just rented this DVD last night, and I loved it. I can't believe I didn't catch this gem while it was playing in theaters (I live in Montreal, so I have no excuse). :)
The film has been submitted for Best Foreign Film consideration for the 2001 Oscars as well, and the distributor is Arrow Features, if I'm not mistaken.
Don't you mean the 2000 Oscars? It was listed in http://www.oscars.org/press/pressreleases/00.11.20.a.html

I am also trying to purchase this DVD. I have tried HMV but every time I enter my Credit Card Number I get an empty page after that and when I check my orders there are none in there. Any other place I could order this from? I tried CNL but you have to ship to your cardholders address which I can not do with this order.

My copy finally came today (from eBay, brand new) and I put it in right away.
I must say, Maelstrom is one of the best films I have seen in a while (next to AI and Memento :)). Marie-Josée Croze is very good looking (on par with Rini Bell

) and is an amazing actress. Denis Villeneuve is a great writer/director and hopefully will direct and write more movies soon.
The way the story was told was a bit confusing at first, but then as I continued watching the film, it all started to come together and make sense. The film is dark and twisted (always a good thing), yet has a happy ending that works really well. This is an amazing film that should be seen by more people (hell, I didn't even know about it till Jase told me about it on ICQ).

Also, I had no problem with the sexual content in the film. Sure the two sex scenes are a bit explicit, but I have seen worse in other films. With all the 'French sex film' comments Jase and Tim we're talking about, I thought this film would have lots of sex and nudity, but I was wrong.

Jason,
Any recommendations on where to buy this while I'm on vacation in Toronto? Basically I'm looking for two key things: the store will have it stocked (most likely) and they aren't charging full retail price. I'm probably going to be staying somewhere around downtown, so the least amount of driving possible would be nice too.
My time spent in Canada up to this point essentially consists of driving across the border and turning around soon thereafter. :)

Marty,
Although a little late in response, sorry to hear you are having problems with CNL. I haven't had any problems with them.
Of course, you could do what Matt did and search on Ebay for a copy as well.
Mark,
Considering I'm on the other end of the country in BC, I don't know exactly the stores to try. I would at the very least try the majors: HMV, Future Shop, etc, but consult the Toronto phone book for video dealers. Possibly even open up a new thread asking where the best video stores in Toronto are.
If you get in a pinch I'll send you a copy, just email me your addy if that happens and I'll take care of it.

Sorry if this seems out of the blue, but has anyone seen Robert LePage's Possible Worlds. I ask because earlier in the thread Jason mentioned Maelstrom (which I still haven't seen--sorry), New Waterford Girl, and Waydowntown as some examples of refreshing Canadian cinema, but I've heard nothing about LePage's first English film (which I personally liked quite a bit).

Based on this thread, I purchased this movie off of Ebay...
And really liked it. Even found a home on my top 10 of 2000. This is why I enjoy the home theater forum for hidden gems like this movie =)
I found it to be similar to a Kieslowski film. Troubled, multi-layered lead actress... themes of chance, coincidence, redemption. I call it Three Colors: Weird

Seriously though, if you enjoy beautifully shot (loved the high contrast, bright look), unique stories try and get a hold of a copy.
