Is there an internal switch to set how long it remains on without sound before going into standby? I know someone who has it and his has been fixed before. The point is his remains on longer than mine and I wondered if there was an adjustment for that internally.

I doubt there's anything you could adjust casually(like a knob). If you contact JBL techsupport they might offer some help if you are willing to take a soldering iron to the unit.

Also, try lowering the volume control on the sub, and increasing the subwoofer *leveler* control in the receiver to compensate. This can help keep the subwoofer from falling asleep since it sees a higher voltage from the receiver.
