My opinion on this matter is as such. When you buy a DVD
player you are buying it for the quality playback of DVD's
and the manufacturers know this. They spend more time and
more money on the DVD side of things both hardware and software
wise.
I had a Sony DVP S-360 and I was using it as a CD Player and
it was absolutely atrocious, Music would distort even at low
volumes. The reason was that the S360 had one stinking laser
that was used for both DVD and CD. DVD's need a stronger
laser to permeate through multiple layers of the DVD and I
beleive when you play a CD with that same laser reading the
disk you get shrill playback.
I recently upgraded to Panasonic's new CV51 5 Disk Carousel
which handles CD,DVD,VDISK,MP3,CD-R and CD-RW and this particular
unit uses 2 seperate dedicated lasers, one for DVD only and
the other for CD Audio formats only. The playback of this
player is very good for an all in one unit. But even still
I have my doubts that you can ever compare a sub $300.00
all in one player to a dedicated $800+ CD/DVD-A or CD/SACD
Player. The extra cash you pay for the latter players most
definately translates into better D/A's and probably even
better optics and PCB's.
