Disc deframenter gets annoying b/c it takes so long. My buddy's computer with Windows 2k doesn't even have it. Has microsoft eliminated it? Is it done another way? Is Windows 2K a good investment?

Yes, Win2K has a built in disk defrag routine, but I much prefer Executive Software's Diskeeper program. It allows you to defrag while other apps are running, and to schedule defrags. It also seems to run much quicker than the built in routine.

Yup, it's on both 2000 and XP. Right-click on the disc you want to defrag (C: or D: or whatever you've called them and select PROPERTIES, then click on the TOOLS tab and the bottom option should be Defragment Now. This is in Win2000. It's in a very similar place in XP (my home PC but I'm not there right now).

Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter.

It allows you to defrag while other apps are running, and to schedule defrags.

You can Schedule since 98, and the defrag programs in 200 and XP are no longer using Norton code and allow you to defrag while other apps are running and you use your computer.

To recommend a different program (I'm not a fan of DiskKeeper) you might also look at O&O Software's OO-Defrag; it's been around for years (We started using it with NT Server 4.0 SP3) and they keep revising it frequently. Very fast, very solid responses from the makers.. http://www.oo-software.com
