Would cutting a hole in sonotube to mount a plate amp on to it be a good idea ?
And how thick should i make the endcaps ?
would 1.5" be good just get two 3/4" slabs of MDF glue them together then cut the holes for the woofer and port hole ?

I don't know if you could say it's a good or bad idea. I think it's neither. The important part is whether you think you could design and implement something to fit in that hole (which whould be strong and air tight) that a plate amp could be mounted and sealed air tight to, then go for it. If not then I wouldn't.
I would have liked to do this, but I decided it would be more trouble than it's worth and built a small box that I mounted to the side of my sonotube (similar to what Hank Frankenberg [sp?] did). This turned out to be surprisingly easy to do.
You can see mine here: http://ht.s5.com/Sonosub.html
Or search for Frank's stuff, there are links to his here somewhere.
As for the endcaps, that is exactly what many others here have done, and I followed suit.
