I thought there was a thread around here dedicated to pics of dvd collections but I couldn't find it. Maybe a mod can find it and merge this post with it?

Anyways, here's the links to the pics (sorry for the crappy quality but the lighting in the front room really sucks)

Interesting effort, good collection.

Though I can't be blamed if the mind wanders to the infamous Moriarty post of a similar nature at you-know-where. :D

Moriarity's post was the best unintentional comedy I've seen on the net in over a year. I don't know how anybody could take that thorough a roasting and live. A good thing I can say about Harold's pix is that he has everything in a sort of alphabetic order.

My collection is clustered by genres and directors. My brother said I should put all the Criterion together by spine number, but I don't like the idea of Beastie Boys right next to L'avventura. That just seems wrong. Putting Antonioni with Fellini, making a seperate cluster for Italian directors, made more sense.

Not a bad collection, good sorting, neat (I don't sort, I just plop them down as I buy them). I have several of your titles, but it looks like you have very few pre-80s films. With such a large collection you'd expect more. There are lots of classics every collection should have. And only 5 Criterions? And where are the LOTR releases?? :D

But tastes differ, I don't mean to come off like a film-snob or anything, God knows I have crap in my collection.

P.S.: What's this "Moriarty post" you talk of?

That's true, I'm seeing a lot of pop culture here. Nothing wrong with that, but its always a good idea to expand your horizons and pick up some classic foriegn films that still look great "8 1/2" "Band of Outsiders" "The Third Man" or even some Fox Studio Classic titles. After all, nobody wants to end up like this guy: http://www.theonion.com/onion3915/dvd_collection.html

Yeah, I'm pretty heavy into 80's movies, and there are still a bunch I can think of that I like but don't have the money or they haven't been released on dvd yet. I was born in 1978, so I think that's one of the reasons I don't like older movies.

LOTR is not for me. I am not into fantasy that much. I watched the first movie and it just wasn't for me.

As far as Criterions, what can I say? Those are the only movies I like.

I guess each person has their own tastes and as you can see it is clearly reflected in their collections.

Ironically, I was born in 1980. I don't think age is a factor of whether one enjoys older films or not. To start you off, get The Graduate and Psycho - these are the first films that come to mind that made me enjoy older films.

I'm actually planing on taking pictures for that purpose.

As for older films, sometimes it just depends on what you are raised on. I had a heavy dose of musicals and comedies from the 50s and 60s, so I got some appriciation for older films.

Why? A collection should only have what that person enjoys. Thats why it is a hobby. Enjoyment. :emoji_thumbsup:

I need to get mine in some semblance of order before I can take pictures.
I have no space, everything is just stacked all over the place.

no you just spend it on the wrong things:D

I also took some piccies of mine, even though the insurance company said that they'd cover the collection. But I doubt they are wiling to replace the +300 DVDs. I am SO SCARED of getting them stolen. Now at least I know that I would get most back (those that are not OOP)

Not only insurance, but for other applications. For one, when my dad started talking about his will and explaining where things were I told him to take lots of pix and send them to me so I know what I'm looking for and where it is.

It makes it a lot easier to deal with and can help if you need to prove that something did exist.

Plus, you aren't just looking for the money if there is a fire or theft, you also need help in putting your life back together at least a little bit so knowing what you had and how you had it arranged can help. Just keep a CD of the photos in a fire proof box/safe in the house, or your safety deposit box.

Me too. Some people think pulling directors out separately is crazy, but I believe enough in auteur theory to see the sense in it. I don't break out all directors on their own of course, only those with definite styles and/or themes to their work.

That still amounts to 20-30 directors with their own "section" on the directors wall.

I don't know what the heat was that Moriarity took, but first of all I'd say "how the hell can you find anything in that mess?" A "to view" pile I understand, though at some point I gave up on that mostly and just started putting things away. I keep an Access Db so I know what I haven't watched yet that way.

So while a set of Fox Classics spines might look cool, it was cooler to me to have all the Murnau's together. :)
