Guys, I had already given up on this and one day, my cousin brought in his new HD A2 to try it out. You know, just to rule out my TV. Anyway, we hooked it up via HDM1 and what do you know? Toshiba logo came up as it was loading. Then I thought it was my own unit that had the problem. I reconnected mine and guess what - it worked too

I was like  - couldn't believe my eyes. Not sure what happened but after doing that, my HD XA1 has been working flawlessly.
I remember they used to tell me that the TV had to be in HDMI1 before powering the player. Now that is working, I can be watching TV while it's loading/starting and then I switch to HDMI and bamn, there it is.
Anyway, I guess I will never know what happened exactly.

both the tv and avr have to be on before turning the HD DVDp on, I have experienced the same thing, no pic, etc, HDMI error on the player itself. Turned on the the display, then avr, perfect everytime.

just got the sony bdps1, its awesome.
