I have a friend who wants to buy a new TV. She currently has digital cable, and HD on some stations will probably be available within the year. She wants this TV to last around 5 or 6 years. 90% of her viewing will be 4:3. She ideally wants to get a 36" tube, but HD only seems to be affordable in a 32" tube. Maybe I can get her to a small rear projection, but I do not know if that would fit at the price point of $1000.

She does not want the widescreen squeeze.

Does anyone have any suggestions.

I'm very happy with my Sony KV-32HS500 , it goes for ~$1200 now and has been put up for sale slightly used here for ~$700. You might run into a good sale on these now that the new product line is out.

Or do what I did, get a Circuit City Credit Card and finance it for 0% for 12 months then cut it up. I'm broke but I was able to buy a $1500 tv thanks to this.
